BUME arriving |
Description: |
Most of the time, BUAB would take the Buffalo Runner and head up to Bevier St and recrew, but sometimes if there was no room, or the power was to be changed, it would run into East Binghamton. Here we see it arriving behind NYSW 3638. This is something of a treat, as this unit was more of a hangar queen, and on the road only sporadically, thus seeing it in service was something of a novelty. |

Description: |
In future years, it would not be a big deal to see a six axle unit working a yard. NS does it all the time. In 1989, it was something of a novelty. This NW GE is not exactly a yard engine. It will have a couple other units added once it gets its outbound train together. For now, its working the south end at Terrace Dr. |

Headed west on the ex NKP |
Description: |
I didnt get to Buffalo much-living in NY City, it was 420 miles just to get there, a little out of reach for having one day off a week-so I did not get to see the action there or west. It was something of a novelty to see a train I had seen in Binghamton, now on the western leg of its journey. Heres AFOB, the Ayer Mass to Bellevue train, getting out of town for a run over the ex NKP to Ohio. It will be a quick trip. This shot also gives a good overview of the industrial part of the city, with grain elevators all along the lake front south of the city, demonstrating Buffalo's prominence as a grain milling center. The huge elevator taking up much of the right background was built by Continental Grain, and was the largest in the world at the time it was built. Continental was notable for being the biggest shipper on the NYC. The girder bridge just beyond the signals was the DLW City Branch, to its Buffalo passenger station. The open drawbridge in the distance is the ex NKP; the NS train will use the adjacent ex Buffalo Creek bridge, which was once owned owned jointly by the Erie and LV. |

HAN 2 in the yard |
Description: |
IF the NYSW did not have a crew ready, Conrail would not let the train stay on the Tier, and NYSW had to stow it in a yard. Today, the choice is East Binghamton, and we see a HAN 2 pulling down to Terrace Drive behind a pair of NS units. When the NYSW crew is on, they will back out through BD and head east. |

Through the blades |
Description: |
SLN 5 rolls through the twin semaphores at MP 243-actually, they are 242-1 and 242-2, they were just east of MP 243-knocking down the signal on track 1. This was probably the most popular shot on the Tier west of Binghamton. Easy to get to, and couldnt beat a pair of blades side by side. |

Coming over |
Description: |
Power from inbound trains would often be pulled off BUME and serviced, or swapped out at Binghamton, and new power brought over from the yard. The train itself vould be left on the Buffalo Runner. A set of NYSW power is rolling through BD as it makes its way to the train at Bevier St. |

OIBU in the gloom |
Description: |
Heavy overcast is not unusual in the Tier, but the trains run anyway, so I was out shooting pictures. Today OIBU has a pair of NS units trailing its GP 40, showing that NYSW doesnt have a monopoly on the Thoroughbreds. The ex Erie freighthouse is peeking out from under the Chenango St overpass. |
