Smoking it up now
Title:  Smoking it up now
Description:  Davidson Road is at the top of a long climb out of a section called Sleepy Hollow, a dip between here and Gentry down into a creek valley. Unit trains really work here, and this 101 car grain train is no exception, and it shows as the leader smokes from a bad turbo as it makes a final push to crest the grade.

Snoot
Title:  Snoot
Description:  UP had a group of SD40-2s that were known as "snoots" due to their lengthened short hoods. These were set up to carry radio equipment for remote power, then a novel idea which required some specialized equipment. Heres one of them leading a train on the ex Wabash.

252 with unusual power
Title:  252 with unusual power
Description:  252 rolls south over the Harpursville bridge behind a trio of 40's. The two trailing units are notable. The middle unit is an ex SOU unit that was converted to a B unit by CP; they changed it by removing the seats and control stand, and boarding up the windows-yes, boarding up: they used plywood. The trailing unit is ex Greater Winnipeg Water District, and a trade from CN-note the road number that falls into CN's SD40 series.

Classic Erie
Title:  Classic Erie
Description:  The only thing better would have been Erie(or EL, Id take that any day) E 8s on this train, the Southern Tier picnic special, which ran from Port Jervis to Hammond Dam State Park near Wellsboro PA. Here it is on the famous Starrucca Viaduct, a pair of classics if ever there was one.

Southern power rolls
Title:  Southern power rolls
Description:  A set of Southern SD 40s rolls south through a pair of NW signals with a grain train on the NW Shenandoah Sub, showing the effects of the NS merger four years earlier. Long hood forward was standard practice on the Southern and N&W, so the leader is not running backward.

Oddball
Title:  Oddball
Description:  Conrail had 100 GP15-1s, all new from EMD in 1979, which were scattered about the system in local service. Most of them survived to the split, with NS and CSX each getting some. CSX had some already, former Chessie units. On NS, they were orphans, and wound up in odd places. One is working the west end of local H2A(I swear, NS picks the letters and numbers out of a hat when they set up their train symbols) passing the Erie station, at right, in Owego.

Odd power
Title:  Odd power
