Didnt quite make it
Title:  Didnt quite make it
Description:  I like the shots at Baron, since there is a long tangent approaching from the north, allowing several views here. Sometimes I dont get them all; even with a 65 MPH speed limit on US 59, its two lane, and there are an amazing(to me) number of people who are content to run 50 MPH there. So I dont always get the tele shot. Still, the shot is pretty good there, and I did OK for getting sandbagged by a slowpoke en route.

First catch
Title:  First catch
Description:  I heard a southbound from the house, and took off. I cant get through Siloam and still catch one of these trains, so I usually take Ark 59 south and US 62 to Westville, which allows me to get the across the field farm shot most of the time. It worked today, I caught this southbound grain train here in bucolic splendor rolling 100 cars of midwest grain toward Mexico.

Pushing back, and a former customer
Title:  Pushing back, and a former customer
Description:  The dodger power pushes covered hoppers full of plastic pellets into the Pipelife plant, past the now cut off siding for Allens Canning, the one time packers of Popeye spinach, which was once canned here, along with a variety of other vegetables. The brand survives, though Allens is no longer a going concern. The warehouse here is now owned by Pro Pak, and truck served.

Meet in the sage
Title:  Meet in the sage
Description:  Once at the top of the grade in Scholle, US 60 follows the Transcon essentially within sight all the way to Vaughn, though the trains have a way of showing up at difficult spots. I was driving a Winnebago, which limited my flexibility in being able to change directions, so sometimes had to take a shot Id not have done otherwise. This is the meet of the combined stack/oil train, with BNSF 6929 at right, and a westbound behind bnsf 5721. This was the closest I got to passing the eastbound.

Title:  Rolling toward Pedernal Mountain
Description:  A westbound showed while I was climbing the hill out of Encino on US 60, which is four lane with a median there. By the time I could get turned around, I wasnt able to get the shot of the train coming at me. I did get this going away shot as the train rolls west toward Belen, with Pedernal Mountain in the distance.

The day begins
Title:  The day begins
Description:  I started back for home mid day on Dec 11, taking NM 47 to US 60. My first encounter was with a pair of trains at the NM 47 crossing, known as Sais. This westbound, with an eclectic mix of 60 freight, 39 stack platforms, 8 autoracks and two articulated racks, has just met a double move, a stack train with an oil train coupled up to the rear. I figured to catch him at the top of Abo Canyon. Not to be, I did get him at Mountainair, but othrwise, it was a futile chase. The Ferromex unit was a common sight on trains here.

Culver line
Title:  Culver line
Description:  This view is taken from an F train bound for Coney Island, looking west on the remains of the Culver Line, which left the West End Line(B train) at 9th Av and 39th St, going to Mc Donald Av, then turning south to reach Coney Island. As the IND system expanded, parts of the old Brooklyn Rapid Transit were modified or abandoned, and the new subways incorporated. In this case, the IND line to Church Av was extended via a ramp from the subway to the Mc Donald Av elevated line, and the BMT portion was cut, leaving a shuttle that ran from 9th Av to a connection with the F line at Ditmas Av, out of the photo to the left. The shuttle lasted from 1954, when the IND line was connected to the former BMT, to 1976, when it was replaced by buses. As I recall, low ridership and structural issues on the remaining elevated line doomed it.
