Drive by coal
Title:  Drive by coal
Description:  We had gone down to Kentucky one weekend in October, just for a fall foliage road trip since I had a couple of days off, and caught this CSX coal train at Ashland next to the road. Too bad the weather was so dismal. Always my luck.

Schneider man
Title:  Schneider man
Description:  Despite being one of the major truckers, and a big user of TOFC, Scheider was slow to take on containers, which JB Hunt had done by the early 90s. This Schneider box on a westbound NS train was therefore something of a novelty. There are a lot more of these now.

Parking lot shot
Title:  Parking lot shot
Description:  Getting a shot of a northbound in the early morning could be problematic due to not having good side angle. The light was good as a rule, just nothing much open. There was a restaurant in town that had a fairly wide open shot in the parking lot, which is where we see 413 headed north

Description:  How things have changed over the years....CP local D 22 rolls under the signals at CPF 587 in Afton. Or more like it for D&H fans, SU 2 rolls past the signals at GR cabin....now if only the power was a pair of RS 11s or RS 36s.

Steel both ends
Title:  Steel both ends
Description:  The coils on these cars weight about 40,000 lbs each-which is why you only see one of them on a truck trailer-but a coil car can carry four easily. Theyre over the trucks to put less stress on the car, as the wheels support the weight better. This car is on the north bound H train.

Going for a ride
Title:  Going for a ride
Description:  We went up to North Conway on the way to Mt Washington in July 2004. It was a convenient place to overnight, and we got to ride a few miles on the old Maine Central Mountain Division. Sadly, gone are the days of harvest gold GP 38s lugging real tonnage over the White Mountains to Vermont. The weather, as it always is for me, is dismal.

Holding the main
Title:  Holding the main
Description:  There is a southbound grain train holding the main as the H train takes the siding. It will work here, making both a set off and a pick up. Todays H train is 147 cars, and it will block the south end for quite a while, making a long wait for the guys on the grain train. The grainer has one of the few Belle painted AC44's leading.

Title:  Dont see these much here

Southbound on the MKT
Title:  Southbound on the MKT
Description:  I was heading north on adjacent US 69 when I saw a headlight approaching in the distance. One great thing about a four lane road with a 65 MPH speed is that I can run 72 without worrying about getting ticketed. I chased back south a couple of miles to get this southbound with a lot of yellow up front.
