Cluttered
Title:  Cluttered
Description:  The scene here is filled with urban clutter, showing that not all railroading is done in wonderfully scenic locations. H 88 gets underway from Binghamton behind a pair of BNSF units, crossing State St on the old Erie steel viaduct leading to the Chenango River bridge. The famous Kingsley Building is the backdrop for the action.

New red order
Title:  New red order
Description:  For a long time, CP resisted sending its fleet of GEs to the D&H, preferring instead to run out what miles the various SD 40 types still had in them. This 39T was a sight, having five of the newer units leading across the Chenango River. The red brick building to the far right is the Derby Knitting Mills, which would be burn to the ground in a spectacular fire a few years after this shot was taken.

Scenic view from new bridge
Title:  Scenic view from new bridge
Description:  After years of discussion, the Apalachin-Campville connector was built near exit 66 of NY 17, the Apalachin exit. It extended across the Susquehanna to reach NY 17C near Campville, allowing a view of the tracks not previously available. We see 11T behind a mix of 40s as it rolls 39 cars along the river, about 15 minutes from Binghamton.

Title:  Beach day
Description:  The empty grain train rolls over the Elk River at Ginger Blue, a group of kids enjoying the high 70 degree day watching the 100 cars roll overhead. This was a one way chase, as there was nothing to meet at McElhany, near Neosho. So it goes.

Flowers too
Title:  Flowers too
Description:  The rocks along the line can be a great photo prop, but the delicate and colorful nature of flowers is also appealing. The grain train rolls past some rocks and flowers as it heads north in this wide angle view. The cliff above the trailing units is better seen in a southbound view about 1/2 south. The exposed rock makes a dramatic backdrop and was used by KCS for publicity photos.

Big rocks
Title:  Big rocks
Description:  The line in this part of Missouri follows Butler Creek up to Noel, where it reaches the Elk River. Over the millions of years it has taken for the valleys to form, many rocks have fallen from the cliffsides, among them some very large ones. The empty grain train passes on of them just south of Noel.

Down by the station
Title:  Down by the station
Description:  There are still a few stations on the Heavener Sub, a couple of them museums, a couple now city hall in their communities. The station here is a museum, and on the opposite end, has a Belle painted F 7, 73D. Its not visible in this shot of a northbound empty grain train pulling past the station and signal 216-9 behind a gray SD 70MAC.

Fly in the ointment
Title:  Fly in the ointment
Description:  When the northbound empty TXUX train didnt start once the H train cleared the north switch at Stilwell, it caused me to miss the shot of the Belle leader at the station. Heres why the northbound didnt get the signal: this light power move south, coming into town about 15 minutes behind the H train.

This is going to be a problem
Title:  This is going to be a problem
Description:  I had hoped when I started the chase of the H train that I would be able to get a nice, low light angle shot as it passed the station in Stilwell. When I got to the station, I parked, then looked down to check the signal. Thats when I saw the northbound empty TXUX train. My immediate thought was, the empty train will take the siding, letting the 10000 ton merchandiser roll on through. Nope. As it got closer, I could see the coal train was holding the main. Crap. Maybe it will be a rolling meet-KCS often hold an effective meet, and trains almost dont come to a complete stop. It was not to be. The coal train stopped with its rear end about 9 cars too far south, and my shot of the H train was going to be blocked. Curses, foiled again!! This is the head end of the coal train approaching the Stilwell station.

Til the cows come home
Title:  Til the cows come home
Description:  The H train rolls past a cow pasture and creek north of Stilwell. The trees have been creeping up on this shot; only a few years ago it was much more open, and a good part of the train could be seen. Now youre lucky to get a clean shot of the power, and wont if its more than three engines.

High above
Title:  High above
Description:  After pulling from the siding, making for a slow start, there is a 30 MPH curve at Chewie Rd that also keeps a train from getting up to speed. The result is, I have enough time to climb the hill along US 59, another vantage point opened up when the road was widened to 4 lanes a couple of years ago. This is the H train seen from the top of the bluff.

Ballard Creek
Title:  Ballard Creek
Description:  The H train was pulling from the siding, so had a 15 MPH speed restriction through the interlocking. That makes it easy for me to get ahead. This shot is now viable since ODOT is working on widening US 59 through Watts and has cut most of the trees. The bridge crosses Ballard Creek south of Watts.

View from the hill
Title:  View from the hill
Description:  In the course of widening US 59 to four lanes, the right of way was opened up to accommodate the wider roadway, which meant blasting out some of the adjacent hillside south of Watts, near Chewie Rd. Getting to the top of the hills next to the road is a fairly easy thing, as you can park off road and walk up. I took advantage of this to get a shot of a southbound H train, whose power we see here just north of Chewie Rd.

Going my way
Title:  Going my way
Description:  I heard this train going by the house, and gave chase, catching it at Westville, passing the H J Baker feed mill. The leader looks a little worse for wear, not unusual for UP coal power, which sees a lot of exposure to the elements, but apparently not too many trips through the wash rack.

Description:  13T approaches the NY 17C overpass on a gloomy afternoon, a pair of UP units leading. Action at Yard A
Title:  Action at Yard A
Description:  A view of Sunnyside Yard A taken from the IRT shows a wealth of activity there. The freight action is much busier than now-I think the NY & Atlantic, who now runs the freight on the Island, no longer uses this yard. Fallen flag cars are all over, including MP, ACL, BAR and Pennsy. The passenger action is good, too. A westbound LIRR train led by a double decker is passing on the main as a Pennsy train exits the yard, heading into Penn Station to pick up. Judging by the P 70s, Im guessing a Clocker to Philly. The Sunshine Biscuits building was a long time fixture in Long Island City, as was the Silvercup Bakery, next to the 59th St Bridge-it's a movie studio now-and the Chiclets factory. If you were in the right place, Long Island City smelled pretty good!!

The only way to ride
Title:  The only way to ride
Description:  If you cant ride in the engine. Up until NJ Transit reequipped its trains, starting in the mid 1980s, there was a lot of hand me down equipment in service that had been owned by the predecessor roads, much of it cars that were rendered excess as train offs mounted in the 1960s, and finally when Amtrak started in 1971. Almost all of the cars had dutch doors, which were a wonderful place to ride on a nice day. The practice was long standing, and train crews generally didnt chase you. Im riding the NY & Long Branch down on the shore as we approach as station I cant recall, the train sweeping around a long curve behind a pair of E 8s. I always liked the signals on the Bay Head line, one of which is at left. They reminded me of the ACL.
