On a roll
Title:  On a roll
Description:  Train 164 is now clear of the Binghamton terminal, and getting a move on southbound. We see him along the local road that becomes NY 7A when it crosses into NY. Here, its just another rough road in PA. Hopefully the 164 has a smoother ride than I will.

No speed runs here
Title:  No speed runs here
Description:  H 01 is seen in the distance, ambling along with some cars for National Pipe and Plastic across the river in Vestal. This was once a mighty main line, the likes of Phoebe Snow sprinting along at a cool 70. Her ghost will be haunting the house at a leisurely ten today, allowing her memory to linger as the afternoon gloom fades to night.

Unusual angle
Title:  Unusual angle
Description:  Most of the photos you see of trains on the Chenango River bridges are from the Clinton St bridge, or nearby, since thats the sun side, most of the time. There are limitied opportunities to shoot a photo on the other side-late in the day, or early morning in the summer, or on cloudy days. Ive taken advantage of Binghamtons legendary gray skies to get this shot of 41T with old and new EMDs crossing the Chenango, seen from McDonald Av on the north side of the bridge.

While you wait
Title:  While you wait
Description:  As the dodger was working Pipelife, an often time consuming project with a lot of sitting and waiting time, I heard a horn off to the south. Must be another northbound. Three minutes later I got this 100 car northbound empty grain train passing the local behind an ES 44, and a repainted AC44CW, of which there seem to be more and more lately.

Title:  Under a wintry sky
Description:  The sun angle is giving the clouds that wintry look-they just look cold-belying the 65 degree temperature on this February Friday. Three units pull up to Kenwood St with a cut of cars from Pipelife, whom they have just been switching on the other side of the US 412 overpass.

Description:  The dodger, officially L 102, works at Pipe Life-Jetstream. Guess what they make!! The groundman is somewhere down the cut of cars, most likely connecting air hoses and checking couplers so the engineer can pull the empties.

Looking to Panama
Title:  Looking to Panama
Description:  A view of the Mopac looking east from OK 9. The line disappeared into the trees, came out briefly near a feed mill on the south side of town, then went back into cross country mode, heading for Panama OK and eventually Excelsior Ark. If there was a station at Keota, its long gone. I'm trying to picture a GP 18 and a dozen or so cars here.

Interesting yard power
Title:  Interesting yard power
Description:  A GP 40-2 and a GP 10 work at the east end of Gang Mills yard, cleared onto the eastbound main from the yard lead as DABU rolls in from the west. The GP 40 was not unusual here. We saw lots of them in all kinds of service, from locals to stack trains. The GP 10, on the other hand, was something of a novelty, as they tended to stay down toward Enola and eastern PA. We rarely saw them on the Tier.

Title:  Han Solo
Description:  These are not the stacks you are looking for. A solo GATX unit has train 252, about to become HAN 2 when the NYSW crew takes over, at QD. I don't recall if the Suskie added power to this train. If not, it was a long night on the Delaware Division for the crew.

Deep cold
Title:  Deep cold
Description:  It was deep snow and deep cold this day in January, temperatures in the teens, as was the depth of the snow pack. Does that keep me in?? Dont be silly. There are trains to chase. In this case, its BH 1 with a three builder consist, heading north up the connection from the D&H that was built as part of the Bevier St improvement, where the D&H bridges were raised to allow standard 136" trailers, and the ex DLW bridge used by the NYSW was removed in favor of the new connection.

Combined effort
Title:  Combined effort
Description:  Sometimes if there were not enough cars for two trains, 558 and 270 would be combined out of Buffalo. Such is the case here, as the 105 car train has power for both of its components, 270s power ahead, with 558s two CP units trailing. We see it at East Hornell, where it is about to meet a hi-wide Conrail extra.

B Boats galore
Title:  B Boats galore
Description:  Upstate NY was overrun with GEs, largely because Selkirk was the maintenance base for many of them, among them the 50 C30-7As, a unit unique to Conrail. There were also hordes of B 23-7s, which mostly worked in yard and local assignments. One of those was Fulton based local WAFU 12, seen here arriving at Dewitt with 78 cars behind its four GEs.

Title:  Making the money

TV 79
Title:  TV 79
Description:  TV 79 was one of the hottest trains on the railroad, only a little cooler than TVLA, which was a direct run through to the Santa Fe. TV 79 also handled Santa Fe traffic, but did not run through, and had to transfer across Chicago. I think it may have also handled cars for Chicago delivery at 51st St. Here we see it blasting through the station behind a four unit set of GP 40-2s, a common power set for this type train.

Either way, this was one of a number of cars in this train still in predecessor road reporting marks. The diesel fleet may be completely repainted, but the rolling stock likely never will.

CMO
Title:  CMO
Description:  Some of the major roads have a number of initials that have accumulated over the years as they have made acquisitions and merged other roads. Some of these are still in use, having never been out of circulation; some have been retired, either by design, or have just faded away as their original owners equipment was retired, and been brought back. CMO us one of those road names still in action belongs to the Chicago, Minneapolis, St Paul & Omaha, which came to the UP via the Northwestern, who merged them in 1960. Here it is on a two bay hopper, almost sixty years after the original road was merged.
