Lightning stripes are back
Title:  Lightning stripes are back
Description:  One of the projects NYSW engaged during its reign over the D&H was to have some of the GP 38s and 39s rebuilt by M-K at Mountain Top PA. The first one to be completed, ex LV unit 7312, was back on the property in March of 1990, and named in honor of legendary D&H engineer Bernie OBrien. We see a side view of the unit outside the East Binghamton engine shop.

PYRP arrives
Title:  PYRP arrives
Description:  PYRP crosses Terrace Drive and enters the East Binghamton yard. Power is typical, but today we have something different, rebuilt GP 38-2 7312, just in from M-K in Mountain Top PA. Note the railfan chase vehicle in the foreground. This was a Canadian built Chevy Celebrity for the Canadian market-the speed read in kilometers per hour, and the odometer counted kilometers. It took some adjusting to figure out how far and fast you were going. I got pretty good at multiplying everything by 5/8ths.

Now thats more like it!!
Title:  Now thats more like it!!
Description:  The M-K rebuild program has borne fruit, and the new diesels are back and in service. Showing the flag on this BUME at Phelps St in Port Dickinson are four lightning stripes, two each GP 38 and GP39-2s. My job allowed me some leeway in train watching-I ran a commercial laundry route-but not enough to give chase. Id have loved to see these on the bridge at Harpursville. GP 38-2 7307, the "Competition" leads the 73 cars of today's train.

Diesels too
Title:  Diesels too
Description:  Steamtown had a good roster of diesels from the late steam era-sometimes there were more of them running than steam power. We see two from that period, DLW 637, an F 7, and DLW 514, a GP 7, along with D&H 7312. The D&H unit would not come along til the 70s, but the colors date to the early 60s. The 514 was something of a chameleon. It also wore the colors of NKP, same number, while it was at Steamtown.
