Go green!! |
Description: |
Long before it was an environmental imperative, NYSW had lots of green, though theirs was ex BN. A pair of them lead this BUME up the Buffalo Runner toward Bevier St and a crew change. |

Long stacks |
Description: |
Conrail would not let the D&H/NYSW stack trains change crews on their main, so the trains had to pull into one of the yards. This SLN 4 is pulled down to Terrace Drive, its train stretched all the way back out to the north end. It will be a long back up move to get back out onto the Tier to go east at BD. |

In recent years, some railroads have pretty much shut down, with only essential operations running. Apparently, Sea Land stacks were not essential, as this SLN 3 is backed onto the Utica Branch, waiting for a D&H crew that will come on later this evening for the run to Buffalo. |

Turning move |

A set of power has come out of East Binghamton and across CR at BD, and will shortly clear the crossovers at the south end of Bevier St. Then it will go back down to QD, reverse and go through town on the Tier to get back to the yard. Guess they really wanted the NYSW B 40 leading. |

Why they turned the power |
Description: |
Walter Rich put out a directive when the NYSW started running the D&H that NYSW painted units were to lead wherever practicable. This power set is being turned to get the B 40s in the lead. The unit on the other end is a leased GATX GP 38, so its also possible the crew wanted the new unit to run from. |

Six NYSW units lead what looks like a KL 1, but was called MEBU on the radio. There were probably not enough cars to run the trains separately-the car count was 73 on this train-so they were combined, saving a crew start. We see the train near the Tioga County transfer station, about where the LV Auburn Branch ducked under the EL. Two of the original four B40's are on this train. |

NYSW used whatever was handy for locals. Todays effort is being made by one of their almost new B 40s, seen here pulling a cut of cars out on the Buffalo Runner. Note the D&H box car head out. |

SU 100 |
Description: |
SU 100 was the trackage rights train that started it all. When NYSW got the ex DLW Syracuse and Utica lines in 1982, they negotiated trackage rights from Passaic Jct to Binghamton over Conrail to move cars from one part of the operation to the other. Those trains were symbolled SU 99 west and SU 100 east. This SU 100 is getting ready to roll to Jersey with the usual non stack traffic. There must not have been an eastbound stack that day; NYSW usually added cars at Binghamton to any stacks going to Jersey. |

Combined effort |
Description: |
Sometimes if there were not enough cars for two trains, 558 and 270 would be combined out of Buffalo. Such is the case here, as the 105 car train has power for both of its components, 270s power ahead, with 558s two CP units trailing. We see it at East Hornell, where it is about to meet a hi-wide Conrail extra. |
