PLMT |
Description: |
Among the as needed moves were coal trains to a power plant in Mt Tom, Mass. These originated on the P&LE, and sometimes the power ran through. A lot of times, it came in with a variety of D&H or NYSW power, along with whatever CSX had to assist. One such train arrives at BD with an NYSW B 40 leading a pair of CSX units and a leaser. |

MEBU in the corn |

This field in Owego was a favorite vantage point. There was a good, open view of the tracks, and the crops changed periodically, so it was always a new view from season to season, and year to year. Heres MEBU with a pair of GEs bracketing one of NRLs F 45s. How about that Rio Grande auto rack head out?? |

Fields of gold |
Description: |
The time between when the corn went brown til the first snow could have some wonderful light, especially late in the day, when it made all the corn and grasses take on this golden hue. MEBU rolls west between Chemung and Wellsburg past one of those cornfields. Scenes like this made it a joy to chase in the Southern Tier, despite the lack of density compared to the Chicago Line or the ex PRR. |

SLN 5 behind NYSW and NS power |
Description: |
NYSW and NS power leads SLN 5, symboled DHT 9 on Conrail, past the rocks just east of CP East Glass. This is the approximate location where the DLW and Erie joined going east, with the DLW trains taking the Erie from here to Binghamton after 1959. The DLW was abandoned from here to the west side of Binghamton, except for short segments in Elmira, and from Waverly to Nichols to serve an Agway there. That section was abandoned in 1965. If you know where to look when you're on NY 17 east, you can see vestiges of the right of way near Elmira and Wilawanna; there were still some bridges near Lounsberry, and the Apalachin station still stands. It's a Subway and ice cream shop. |

MEBU in the haze |
Description: |
The trees in the northeast throw off a lot of water in the warm weather, making for a haze that hangs over the region most of the summer. MEBU comes around the curve at Chemung looking good, but the hills in the background are almost in a gof. |

Knocking it down |
Description: |
Well, in a moment. The semaphores response once a train hit the circuit was sometimes not immediate. It was fun to watch them drop. |

By the feed mill |
Description: |
There were several industries east of downtown Waverly. The siding in the foreground goes to a place that makes brake parts for cars. There was a pet food plant, the other this big Agway feel mill. Both were Conrail customers, and MEBU will not be stopping to set off any of its 115 cars. |

Yellowjacket trio |
Description: |
CP and NYSW ran their power through on the stack trains, which ran almost daily. With the relatively high number of these trains and the number of diesels needed to keep them moving, it was more common to see mixed consists than matched. It was therefore something of a surprise to see 255-the SLN 5-with a matched set not only of NYSW power, but three of the four remaining B 40s. Here they are about to roll over the road crossing at Canisteo. Any other day I'd have chased this train; I caught it while following 270 east, which had an M636 in the consist. I saw relatively few 6 motor Alcos on the Tier, so was not going to give that up. |

SOO and NYSW power head west |
Description: |
One of the great things for a railfan about the transition from directed service by the NYSW to the CP was the unlikely power mixes. Who ever figured a small regional like NYSW would have its power in the same consists with SOO units?? Yet, here it is.... |
