BUME coming right back.
Title:  BUME coming right back.
Description:  BUME arrives with the power it went west with yesterday, except now the C 424 is mid consist. NYSW as a rule got pretty good utilization out of the power it ran, and it was not uncommon to see power go west one day, and come right back.

Climbing
Title:  Climbing
Description:  The NYSW does not climb like the D&H, which has already gained some elevation-and which seen above the NYSW-but the trains still work a bit coming out of Binghamton. BH 1 rolls north past Binghamton Precast, its concrete vaults peeking through the snow.

Title:  Shop line
Description:  The line up at the East Binghamton shop is almost all Alco today. There are four C 424's, and RS 36 and RS 3M. What's that GP 38 doing there?? Must be lost.

Doing what Alcos do
Title:  Doing what Alcos do
Description:  SU 100 gets under way at Coles after OIBU has cleared, accelerating under a cloud of smoke as Alcos were known to do. This one was originally an EL unit, and is on familiar turf. Remember Camel billboards??

Alcos on the Delaware Division
Title:  Alcos on the Delaware Division
Description:  SU 100 rolls past the industrial park in Kirkwood as it heads down the Delaware Division for Jersey. NYSW would run trains with solid Alco consists, though now that there were a lot of stack trains, SU 99 and SU 100 were becoming uncommon, so spectacles such as this were hard to find. Check out the CP box cars in the script lettering.

Every car counts
Title:  Every car counts
Description:  D&H 74 has a single car on the way up one of the branches, seen at Old State Road, just off NY 7 at the Binghamton city line. Note at far right the distant signal for the D&H crossing at BX, the signal and crossing now long out of service. This line itself will be eliminated in favor of a connection from the adjacent D&H in a couple of years. The D&H is just up the hill. The 10 foot clearance sign is for their overpass above Old State Rd.

Description:  The GEs have picked up the C 424 and are backing onto their train. The rear end power can be seen between the power and the train. Once this set is tied on and the train pulled north, the pushers will be added.

High above
Title:  High above
Description:  BUME rolls north across the Harpursville bridge over Wylie Creek, seen from the north(geographically) side of the bridge. This is not the usual angle, which is from NY 7. This view is lit only in the long days of summer. I took advantage of the late afternoon sun to catch two B40s and an Alco from the NY 235 shoulder.

BUME and an add on
Title:  BUME and an add on
Description:  BUME behind a pair of GEs pulls up to the crossovers at the south end of Bevier St. The C 424 at left will be added to the set. The B 40s will cut off, pick up the Alco for the trip north, then tie back to their train.

Power to head south
Title:  Power to head south
Description:  RPPY and PYRP ran with a mix of CSX and NS power south of Binghamton, though it was usually one or the other, and rarely mixed. This time its NS power, a representative example seen here at the fuel rack. Where else but Binghamton could you find EMD, GE, and Alco all coupled to each other??

Clear of the yard
Title:  Clear of the yard
Description:  RPPY has reached Shaws, the block limit station near Shaw Rd, about a mile or so south of Terrace Dr. Now clear of the East Binghamton yard, it still had a long slow ride before it could start to run, as there was a 10 MPH speed restriction almost all the way to the state line. It made for an easy chase, but not so good for the crews.

Moving now
Title:  Moving now
Description:  RPPY has cleared the slow trackage in NY, and is now getting a roll on as it runs next to the road coming into Hallstead. The long hood forward practice on NS extended to the modern GEs, which must have been a real pain for the crews.

Pulling the north end
Title:  Pulling the north end
Description:  Ever present D&H 5017 pulls a cut of cars to the north end of the yard. It's not the lone Alco here, as C 424 74 sits on the ready track.

Not our Alco
Title:  Not our Alco
Description:  But any Alco will do. D&H 74, a C424, works as the power for BH 1 at the NYSW yard in Binghamton. The electrical cabinet of C 430 3004 languishes at right.

Turning north
Title:  Turning north
Description:  PYRP is about to hit track 5, the track that diverges from track 3 to go to Bevier St and north. Despite an effort to have NYSW power lead, and a trend toward more uniform power consists, sometimes the yards would turn out a dogs breakfast, such as this set of two Guilford painted units, lightning stripe, and a yellowjacket. But theres an Alco!!
