Reading lives
Description:
This GP 39-2 was conveyed from the Reading at Conrail startup a dozen years earlier. Looks like its not quite ready to give up on the old road. This unit, and 7410, would have Reading markings on them til retirement.

Pushing hard
Description:
The pushers on this PYRP are into the climb and working hard. The head end is in the steep part of the grade approaching Moottown Rd, working to roll their almost 100 cars to the tunnel and over the top. Shot at Hanock Rd in Sanitaria Springs.

Stone bridge
Description:
PYRPs pushers cross NY 7 on the stone arch bridge. Seen from a side road off NY 7, this shows the scenic beauty of this part of the D&H. As I write this in 2015, this shot is pretty well treed in.

Reading still with us
Description:
The pushers on this PYRP have made the tunnel, with the trailing unit showing that the Reading may be gone, but not forgotten. This is one of the GP 39-2s conveyed at Conrail startup, still in its original colors.

Pushing it in
Description:
PYRPs helpers push the train right into the tunnel before cutting off. The signal guards the tunnel entrance, which has a door on it to keep out the elements during bad weather. It helps prevent icing in the tunnel.

Title:
Penn Division
Description:
In an ironic twist of fate, PYRP, once the WR 7, seen at the top of the photo, would have crossed this plate girder bridge over NY 7 on its way north. The D&H last used this bridge several years prior during the detours while Belden Tunnel was rebuilt, and it has sat unused since then. It would not be removed for another couple of years, when NY State rebuilt the NY 7 bridge over Wylie Creek, which PYRP is crossing on the well known Harpursville Bridge.

Pulling up after set off
Description:
The power off PYRP pulls up to cross back over to its train after setting off cars. This view shows the shop building, now largely unoccupied, as all locomotive work is done elsewhere. We see a couple of pieces of D&H equipment, though. A wide vision caboose in the distance, and a pig flat, not a common car type on the D&H.

Clearing town
Description:
MEBU rolls under the signal at West BD with an ex Reading leader as it clears the Binghamton yard area and rolls for Buffalo. Note the steel milepost under the cab of the 7412. This was DLW MP 195, the westernmost milepost on what remained of the continuous Lackawanna track from New Jersey. Most of the railroad west of here was abandoned after 1959. The remnant in the Binghamton area is at far right, the Vestal Spur, which dead ends a few miles west across the Susquehanna in Vestal.

Clear of the yard
Description:
RPPY has reached Shaws, the block limit station near Shaw Rd, about a mile or so south of Terrace Dr. Now clear of the East Binghamton yard, it still had a long slow ride before it could start to run, as there was a 10 MPH speed restriction almost all the way to the state line. It made for an easy chase, but not so good for the crews.

Moving now
Description:
RPPY has cleared the slow trackage in NY, and is now getting a roll on as it runs next to the road coming into Hallstead. The long hood forward practice on NS extended to the modern GEs, which must have been a real pain for the crews.
