Description:  D&H 5017 pulls a cut north as it prepares to switch the train at East Binghamton. This unit would last into the CP era, working mostly as a yard engine, but occasionally getting out on the road when NYSW operated the D&H from 1988-1990.

Description:  The pushers on this PYRP are into the climb and working hard. The head end is in the steep part of the grade approaching Moottown Rd, working to roll their almost 100 cars to the tunnel and over the top. Shot at Hanock Rd in Sanitaria Springs.

Description:  PYRPs helpers push the train right into the tunnel before cutting off. The signal guards the tunnel entrance, which has a door on it to keep out the elements during bad weather. It helps prevent icing in the tunnel.

Still at it

Description:  D&H 5017 shows its resilience, working in pusher service on PYRP at the north end of Dyes Siding at the Moottown Road crossing. The RS 36 would outlast the siding, which would be removed in a couple of years, ending its days in yard service under CP.

Description:  There are several features in this shot that are now classics. The "Susquehanna Division" sign, now long gone, recalls the EL, as does the signal, a reminder of the time when this was DLWs main track past the yard, not a running track as it is now. Of course, the RS 36 switching in the D&H lightning stripe scheme is one of the best paint jobs in America-on an Alco.

Yard job with an unusual switch
Title:  Yard job with an unusual switch
Description:  The NY State Operation Lifesaver car was at Binghamton being switched by an RS 36. Dont recall what the event was, probably training for presenters. The car was a classroom on wheels and toured all over the state. Note the old DLW roundhouse and turntable to the left of the car. When CP took over, they would remove the table and fill the pit, then build a new turntable.

Working the siding
Title:  Working the siding
Description:  NYSW would use the siding just south of Chenango Forks as a relay point for cars going up the Syracuse Branch, and sometimes for car storage. They often had a string of stored hoppers there. D&H 5017 has the honor of working BH 1 today, which is moving cars in and out of the siding. It has pulled up to the switch for the Syracuse Branch, which is in the foreground. Hes on the Utica Branch, which saw service almost daily at that time.

Description:  SU 2 was the local that worked the Binghamton area and north to Oneonta. Typical power was a pair of units. In CP days, this would be handled by a mix of GP9 rebuilds and GP 38s, with an occasional ex Guilford GP 40 thrown in. During the NYSW era, anything they had could show up, as in this case, a GP 39 and RS 36 holding down the job at Bevier St

Description:  For now. Though CP road power had started to make itself known, and was showing up on most road trains, the yard power was yet to infiltrate on any significant basis at this point. So, we find D&H 5017 doing what it has done for the last few years. The sign also wears the company colors, but it will soon be replaced with a sign noting the new owners. The Alco will do better, lasting a few more years before it, too, is replaced by something in red.

Strange bedfellows

Description:  A match up no one ever expected to see, D&H 5017 and CR 6615 together entering the CP yard at Binghamton. The reason for the strange pair is an emergency repair to one of the CR units traction motors at the CP shop. D&H 5017 was one of the last D&H Alcos to be retired.
