Yellowjacket on the DLW |
Description: |
MEBU rolls west on track 3, the former DLW westbound main. We see it passing a couple of notable Lackawanna structures. The obvious one is the 1907 station, now privately owned. The stack is from the powerhouse, used to provide power to the station and also the station steam lines for set off sleepers and other cars. The radio tower is a landmark, one of the earliest "Marconi" towers, used in the infancy of radio communications on the railroads. DLW was an early participant in radio, due to a large presence in the "sleet belt", where icing often took down telephone and telegraph lines in the winter. |

This field next to NY 17C at the foot of the overpass changed condition periodically. At one point, there had been an aggregate plant here-see photos in various Morning Sun books on the EL-but by the time I arrived in 1988, there were no structures on the parcel. It did get dug up from time to time. This was one of those times, and we see a 64 car BUME rolling past on its way east. |

NY 9 still yellow |
Description: |
Stack trains were most likely to have solid NYSW consists, and todays NY 9 does not disappoint. An SD 45 and a pair of B boats have the 200 platforms(!!) rolling west at Chemung late on a summer day. |

The other side of town |
Description: |
While the semaphores here got almost all the attention-justifiably-there was also another Erie relic in town. Unbeknownst to many, there was an Erie station still standing here. It was in pretty bad shape by 1990, but still up. NYK 6 passes with 60 stack platforms behind a pair of yellowjackets. |

Lease power galore |
Description: |
And a few NYSW units, including both F45s. There are a few other odds and ends in this shot taken from the trailer park next to the yard, including EMD test bed PLM 3041, and RS 36 5009, both partly visible. I was not able to get the numbers, but there is also a D&H GP 38 and a C424 back in the line. |

Coal power |
Description: |
A power plant at Mt Tom Mass received coal from a mine in southwestern PA on the P&LE. Sometimes the power would run through to Binghamton, then turn back. I caught a set in the yard occasionally, though I was never able to see it on the road. |
