Big crowd |
Description: |
The Maple Festival always drew a big crowd, many more people that the small town was normally able to accommodate. The train was a good way for people to come down from Cortland, as parking was at a premium. The Cortland County Sheriff even had deputies out to direct traffic, as we see here by the station. Note the heavy coats. The temperature was only in the 30's, not uncommon for that time of year. At least the sun was out. Some years it snowed. |

BH 1 on the Cortland side |
Description: |
Getting a train on the Syracuse Branch during this era was something of a challenge. Conrail retained the line as far as Jamesvillem south of Syacuse, to serve a stone quarry, and was not willing to sell it to NYSW. As a result, the Suskie had only local business on it, which was served roughly twice a week. At the time, the Utica Branch was the more viable line, with almost daily service. So it was a catch to find a train running here. I got lucky this day, getting C 430 3000 rolling into Cortland. |

Lackawanna classic |
Description: |
BH 1 rolls past the DLW station at Whitney Point. Now owned by a non rail business, the station is in reasonably good shape, considering its age, and that there has not been a passenger train calling here since 1958. |

Remember those?? |
Description: |
By 1990, the cost, availability, and ease of use had gotten to the roint with consumer video equipment that it was no longer the preserve of high tech professionals, and just about anyone with a couple of bucks could get one and use it effectively. Thb result was, they were everywhere. This one is set up to catch the U&MV trip here at Whitney Point while its owner shoots film. Who would have imagined then that wed be taking video om our phones?? |
