Flushing and Astoria Special
Title:  Flushing and Astoria Special
Description:  When I was in high school, I was a member of the Electric Railroaders Association, which was an interesting group that ran some really interesting trips over the NYCTA, among other places. The trips usually used historic equipment, often IRT Low-Vs, since if they did a trip that ran on both A and B Divisions, theyd have to be able to meet the clearances on the IRT. This trip was one of those, as it ran both the Flushing #7 line, and the Astoria Line, using the crossovers on the upper level just north of Queensboro Plaza to switch from the IRT to the BMT. I dont recall the rest of the trip-I probably have the trip packet around here somewhere-but Im sure it was a fun ride. Those trips, for all the constrains of running on a very busy, but limited, system, were always good trips.

70th Anniversary
Title:  70th Anniversary
Description:  The ERA ran a trip for the 70th Anniversary of the IRT, New Yorks first underground subway, on October 27 1974. As I recall, it ran with IRT Low-Vs, and covered all of the original IRT, starting at the Grand Central shuttle station, using the now out of service connection to the Lexington Av line, as well as some other lines.

LIRR Parlor Car trip
Title:  LIRR Parlor Car trip
Description:  The Electric Railroaders Association in New York sponsored a parlor car trip on the LIRR. It ran, among other places, Greenport, the only time I have taken the train there. The cars were modified P 72 coaches, set up with a bar/food service area, and armchairs. Five years earlier, theres a good chance it would have been run with heavyweight and streamlined cars, handed down from long distance trains displaced by Amtrak.

NYSW Utica Branch
Title:  NYSW Utica Branch
Description:  In July 1983 I rode a trip on the NYSW that originated in Utica, and went to the Waterman Conservation Center in Sherburne. It was a fun trip, running behind Alcos, and true to NYSW form, we did some switching in Utica on the way back.

Cheaper than Amtrak
Title:  Cheaper than Amtrak
Description:  The NRHS convention was in Richmond VA in 1983. In addition to the excursions that ran as part of the convention, there were also trips that ran the weekend before, among them an Alexandria-Hagerstown trip via the Southern Railway Strasburg Branch, and the NW Shenadoah Division from Front Royal. Sunday of that weekend was a ferry trip to get NW 611 and S&A 750 to Richmond. The fare for the trip was $14, cheaper than Amtraks $19 between the two points at that time. Get where youre going, and save some money, too. And tell the folks meeting you at the train, youll be on the one with double headed steam!!

Title:  Hoboken Festival III souvenir ticket
Description:  NJ Transit held an annual event at Hoboken Terminal that showed off various equipment in the fleet, as well as gave short rides out to Rutherford. It was a well attended event, kind of like a block party with trains.

Hoboken Festival III Excursion ticket
Title:  Hoboken Festival III Excursion ticket
Description:  The reverse of the admission ticket for the Hoboken Festival was a ticket for the short ride out to Rutherford. They actually stopped short of the station, so you could ride all day long if you wanted. Nobody was getting a free ride to anywhere!!

Last train
Title:  Last train
Description:  I rode the last public excursion to run at Bellows Falls prior to their move to Scranton. This is the ticket. It was a good trip, and ran more or less on time. There was a big crowd, hence a big train, and it was powered by CP 1246 and three RS 1s.

Budd and Branch
Title:  Budd and Branch
Description:  The Branford Electric Railroad Museum sponsored a trip in January 1984 that covered the New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury branches of the ex New Haven. It was a good way to get the mileage on all three branches, plus the New Haven main between Stamford and Bridgeport. The trip was to have run with a pair of RDCs-hence the Budd title, but the morning of Jan 21 turned out to be brutally cold-single digits-and the forecast high was around 20. Rather than risk somewhat shaky Budd cars in extreme weather, the trip ran with a pair of ex Reading coaches sandwiched between a pair of FL 9s. Not RDCs, but still an interesting consist. The trip went without a hitch. But man, was it cold!!

Farewell to the CNJ
Title:  Farewell to the CNJ
Description:  The Tri State Chapter NRHS ran a lot of trips in the mid 80s. Conrail was a willing partner, and Tri State ran a well organized trip. You could not do this today. The trip this ticket covered was the last trip over the CNJ main line to Phillipsburg. After this, the line would be cut near Phillipsburg to accommodate the last miles of I 78 before it crossed into Pennsylvania. It was a good thing for drivers, as it eliminated about three miles of traffic lights and fast food joints in Alpha, but not so much for commuters on the west end of the line, as the trains now ran no farther west than High Bridge. The train ran with three E 8s and a matched consist of mostly ex GN cars. It was a good looking train. A nice touch was the CRRNJ NY City office stamp on the back.

Tioga Central
Title:  Tioga Central
Description:  The Tioga Central ran the former LV Auburn Branch from a Conrail connection at Owego, to North Harford in Cortland County. The primary revenue source was traffic to a LP gas storage facility there. They also ran excursions and dinner trains. This is a ticket for one of their weekend trips from Flemingville, where the railroad museum was, in the former LV station, to Newark Valley, which also had nicely restored LV station. Dinner trains ran out of Owego going to various points on the line, depending on time of year, and how many people were on board.

Steamtown on the Lackawanna
Title:  Steamtown on the Lackawanna
Description:  Ticket for the Steamtown excursion as they ran in the early 1990s, when CP was hosting the trains on the former DL&W, running to a restored station at Kingsley, on the famous Cutoff. Along the way, the trains crossed the famous Nicholson Bridge, otherwise known as Tunkhannock Viaduct, 240 feet high and a half mile long, as well as its smaller sister, Martins Creek Viaduct, 160 feet high. Quite a ride, and the view is spectacular.

Steamtown Railphoto
Title:  Steamtown Railphoto
Description:  Steamtown, after it moved to Scranton, had some big events for several years. One such that ran several years in the 1990s was Railphoto, a day of various equipment being posed for photos, with Railfan and Railroad Magazine editor Jim Boyd running the show. It was not limited to steam, though that was the primary attraction. CP sent several diesels, including lightning stripe painted 7312, as did Conrail. There were also some passenger cars on display, among them in 1992, day business car Mt Stephen, which I was privileged to show people around. This ticket is for the banquet, which was held in the restaurant that occupied the former waiting room at the Lackawanna station. The station had been converted to a hotel, and was quite elegant.

Dinner train
Title:  Dinner train
Description:  When I was driving for JB Hunt, I would get to Denver about once a month on a P&G baby wipe load that went to California. Id drop it in Denver, and a western regional driver would take it the rest of the way, and Id get something back east. One of the great things about the high plains is that you could run a 53 foot trailer anywhere, and I took every possible route to go back to Arkansas, Georgia, wherever. So it was only a matter of time before I found the Dodge City, Ford & Bucklin, a (very) short line running on a part of the Rocks Dodge City branch. At the time, they had an Alco S 1, and a couple of former IC cars, one of which was a diner. I stopped to shoot a couple of pictures, and a gent came out and we chatted a bit. He said they were not doing well, and might fold up, and offered me a couple of passes, of which this is one. A recent trip through the area, March 2023, found no trace of the line, except some old grade and bridge piers.

150th Anniversary
Title:  150th Anniversary
Description:  The NYSW ran a trip in October 2004 that covered the Syracuse Branch, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Syracuse, Binghamton & New York, a DLW predecessor. The weather was dismal, as it always is when I do something special, and the train was a consist only the NYSW could cobble together, with a pair of yellowjackets, the Maine Eastern ex New Haven FL 9s. NYSW 142, and a motley assortment of ex LIRR coaches and ex Metra gallery cars. It was still fun to get the miles, even if we couldnt get off at Binghamton.

Durango & Silverton
Title:  Durango & Silverton
Description:  We went to Durango in September 2008, and thought it would be fun to ride the train to Silverton and back. It turned out the train round trips were sold out, but there was an option for bus to Silverton, train back to Durango, which we took. These are tickets for the bus and train segments. The bus trip was q bit quicker, taking US 550 north over Coal Bank Hill Pass at 10460 feet, and Molas Pass, at 10910 feet. Silverton is at around 9350 feet, which proved a challenge for these flatlanders-we live at about 1200 feet-and walking around town was taxing. Now, 15 years later, I doubt I could do it for very long. The train back was fun and scenic, which is well known.
