When I was driving for JB Hunt, I would get to Denver about once a month on a P&G baby wipe load that went to California. Id drop it in Denver, and a western regional driver would take it the rest of the way, and Id get something back east. One of the great things about the high plains is that you could run a 53 foot trailer anywhere, and I took every possible route to go back to Arkansas, Georgia, wherever. So it was only a matter of time before I found the Dodge City, Ford & Bucklin, a (very) short line running on a part of the Rocks Dodge City branch. At the time, they had an Alco S 1, and a couple of former IC cars, one of which was a diner. I stopped to shoot a couple of pictures, and a gent came out and we chatted a bit. He said they were not doing well, and might fold up, and offered me a couple of passes, of which this is one. A recent trip through the area, March 2023, found no trace of the line, except some old grade and bridge piers. |
