We went to Durango in September 2008, and thought it would be fun to ride the train to Silverton and back. It turned out the train round trips were sold out, but there was an option for bus to Silverton, train back to Durango, which we took. These are tickets for the bus and train segments. The bus trip was q bit quicker, taking US 550 north over Coal Bank Hill Pass at 10460 feet, and Molas Pass, at 10910 feet. Silverton is at around 9350 feet, which proved a challenge for these flatlanders-we live at about 1200 feet-and walking around town was taxing. Now, 15 years later, I doubt I could do it for very long. The train back was fun and scenic, which is well known. |
