Meet at BD |
Description: |
Eastbound 270 behind SOO power is about to meet the NYSW Sea Land train that is about to change crews and head for Buffalo. The 270 will head into East Binghamton across the river, get switched, and then roll north to Mohawk. This photos shows part of the layout at BD. The tracks to the left are the former DLW main, with the line going across to the Court St overpass and under SLN5 is the former DLW Syracuse and Utica line, now used by CP to get to the D&H. Conrail ownership of what had been tracks 3(farthest) and 4(closest to the camera) started here. They were, respectivelt, the 2 and 1 running tracks on the CP, leading over the Susquehanna River to their East Binghamton yard, a former DLW facility. Conrail had redisgnated tracks 3 and 4 to the Johnson Runnng Track and DL 4 respectively bhy this time. |

HAN 2 |
Description: |
HAN2 rolls up onto the D&H at the former location of BX cabin. Hanjin trains ran through onto the NYSW, but if the connecting line, in this case NYSW, could not recrew immediately, Conrail made them park the train off the Tier til it was ready to go. Once NYSW has a crew ready, the train will back onto the Tier at QD and head east. |

Sadness or euphoria |
Description: |
NYSW had some interesting power through the years, though sometimes it was not all that attractive. When it was painted in yellowjacket, it looked sharp. There were also periods where it looked pretty sad, patch painted and mismatched. Today its sadness and not euphoria, as an ex SP tunnel motor in a multicolor patch paint job leads a pair of ex Cartier big Alcos, still mostly in their old scheme. Theres also a glimpse of F 45 3636, in yellowjacket, and definitely in a state of euphoria, as its running. This is SU 99 arriving from Jersey. The tunnel motor would soon get the yellow and black the NYSW is famous for; the Alcos would get sold to WNY&P before they ever got close to a paint booth, and 3636 would eventually become a hangar queen and go to scrap. |

Motley power |
Description: |
An SU 99 pulls up to QD with a mixed bag of power, mostly in ragged paint. The trailing unit is in yellowjacket, and the leader eventually got that scheme. The two Alcos were gone before they got painted, which is a shame, though second unit 3672 did get "NYSW" on the rear above the radiator. Seeing the yellow jacket scheme on big Alcos would have been a treat. |

By the mill |
Description: |
A BH 1 with a CSX standard cab C 40-8 leader gets underway for Syracuse, passing the Agway mill at the south end of Bevier St. The train has 94 cars, a lot larger than most trains on the NYSW at this time. This is more likely a detour move of CSX Q403. It had come up from Jersey over the Southern Tier Line, making the connection to the NYSW via the new switch at East BD, along Court St, then crossing the ex Erie NS line at BD to get here. It will go north on the Syracuse Branch. |

Detour |
Description: |
CSX would sometimes hand off overflow traffic to the NYSW. These trains, SU 403 and 404 on the Suskie, were obviously not high priority, as it would sometimes take 24 hours to get them from Jersey back onto CSX at Syracuse. Here we see one of them behind a Bright Future standard cab C40 and the surviving F45, 3636, just after taking the switch to the Syracuse branch at Chenago Forks. |

On the air |
Description: |
The north end of Bevier St was on the grade up to the tunnel, and NYSW would usually leave an engine on a train that was to be repowered if the rest of the power was going to the yard. This was to keep the air up in the train. Today NYSW 3638 has that task. We see it on an MEBU that will shortly get the rest of its power tied on and head west. The 3638 had a spotty service record, and was in and out of the shop, unlike 3636, which was pretty much constantly working. The lack of 3638s availability made it quite a challenge to get the two F 45s on the same train. I only saw it twice, and was unable to get a shot either time. |

BUME arriving |
Description: |
Most of the time, BUAB would take the Buffalo Runner and head up to Bevier St and recrew, but sometimes if there was no room, or the power was to be changed, it would run into East Binghamton. Here we see it arriving behind NYSW 3638. This is something of a treat, as this unit was more of a hangar queen, and on the road only sporadically, thus seeing it in service was something of a novelty. |

This PYRP is rolling north long hood forward, hard enough with a regular radiator, more so in an SD 45. You have to admit, this is an odd looking consist. My guess is, 3638 had a problem that prevented it from leading, so the power was swapped, and there were no other ready units. |

East side of town |
Description: |
The east side of Waverly has some notable features. Note how wide the tracks are here. There was a center siding here during Erie and EL days, which was removed by Conrail, but the tracks were never straightened. At left is a pet food plant, which would remain a Conrail customer for several more years. We see PLMT, a coal train for Mt Tom Mass, rolling past with four yellowjackets. |

Snaking through |

MEBU rolls through the S curve at Sanitaria Springs, showing off its five yellowjackets. As good as this was, the real prize was in Binghamton on BUOI-an MKT SD40-2. |

F45 reflection |
Description: |
One of the constants in the Southern Tier was the rain-there were 160 cloudy day a year there, and it rained many of them. The result was a lot of puddles. NYSW 3638 is reflected in one of them at the north end of East Binghamton as it waits to go to the Port of Albany with a BUAB. |

It never stops |
Description: |
NYSW had a way of putting together some power combinations youd never see anywhere else. Sometimes it happened in the yard, though often youd see them on the road too. This set was one only the Susie Q could come up with, at East Binghamton. |

Going west |
Description: |
A late SLN 3-the train usually showed in the morning-rolls through Owego on a mission to get to Buffalo. A pair of GEs and a pair of 45s have the task today for the 65 Sea Land platforms, 6 COFC and 7 freight.Note the 40 MPH speed sign. Conrail allowed certain frieghts 50 here, as did EL in days past, so this is a speed restriction, most likely due to work being done in the area. |

Before and after |
Description: |
The two F45s that NYSW acquired from BN are in Binghamton this day. BN 6640 would become NYSW 3638. NYSW 6370, which had been BN 6644, is in the yellowjacket scheme, one it looks quite good in. A little over a year from now, NYSW would take over operation of the D&H while it was in bankruptcy, and these two units would be joined by a couple of old colleagues via NRL-BN 6635 and BN 6642. It was a good time to be a 45 watcher. |

Patch job |
Description: |
The only giveaways in this set of power sitting at the Binghamton engine house are the patch paint on 6509, and the yellowjacket scheme on 6370. Otherwise it could be Idaho. We see both F45s in this photo. I only saw them once working back to back in freight service. BN 6640, to become NYSW 3638, turned into something of a hangar queen, and was beset by a variety of ills that kept it off the road a lot of the time. The trailing unit, 6370, became 3636, and was a steady presence on NYSW trains into the 21st century. |
