Playing in the weeds
Title:  Playing in the weeds
Description:  WS 1 works a customer siding at Hawthorne, fighting its way through the weeds to reach the cars. Hard to believe, looking at this scene, that two mile long stack trains will soon be passing here.

Title:  It really is urban railroading
Description:  The NYSW local is off in the distance in what looks like a rural setting, but which is actually in Paterson. Stack trains are coming to this line in less than a year.

Work extra
Title:  Work extra
Description:  The GP 18s turned up everywhere, so it was no surprise to find one on a work train on the Hackensack River bridge. Note the FJ&G flat right behind the power. The river was still an artery of commerce-note the barge at far right. Stone was a common item transported by barge in the New York area.

Heading out with an Alco leader
Title:  Heading out with an Alco leader
Description:  The NYSW was still using a couple of Alcos in local service. The C430 fleet was down to two units, but C 420 2010 kept on. Here it is leading a pair of EMDs past the Binghamton Agway as it heads up the Utica Branch on BH 1.

Cruddy light
Title:  Cruddy light
Description:  Poor light was not unusual in the Southern Tier-it rained a lot here-and most of us shot photos in it anyway, since you often got some interesting consists, even if it was raining. Heres one of them, a BH 1 with a C420, GP 18, and GP 38, something you could find only on the NYSW. The train is northbound at Phelps St.

It never stops
Title:  It never stops
Description:  NYSW had a way of putting together some power combinations youd never see anywhere else. Sometimes it happened in the yard, though often youd see them on the road too. This set was one only the Susie Q could come up with, at East Binghamton.

Title:  All the way down

Tough angle
Title:  Tough angle
Description:  This was an easy enough spot to get to, but the sun angle could be a problem, especially in the shorter days of winter when it didnt come around very far. We have a back lit BH 1 crossing the Chenango River behind a GP 18 on a cold February day.

Old road
Title:  Old road
Description:  BH 1 rolls north at Old State Rd in Port Dickinson. This was the last winter trains would use this line. By the fall, a new connection from the D&H would be in service here, as part of a project to eliminate two overpasses, and raise the remaining structure at Bevier St, resulting in the abandonment of the ex DLW line south of here to what was once the DLW YO yard. Northern Division trains would connect to D&H tracks here for the remaining trip to the south.

Short train
Title:  Short train
Description:  BH 1 has four cars for the Utica Branch today. It will swap with a job out of Utica, probably at Sherburne, and come back with more cars, working sidings on the way. There was actually a fair amount of traffic on the line at the time, though Sunday was not always busy.

Old freight house
Title:  Old freight house
Description:  It always struck me as odd that some stations and ancillary structures would survive, but others would not. CR tore down the large station at Forks, admittedly a large building is more of a liability and maintenance problem than a small station, but something like this little freight house at Oxford stays. Go figure. BH 1 graces the scene, a classic all by itself with one of the three GP 18s. The passenger station is at far right, now a business.

Description:  This shot is just off River Rd south of Oxford, where there is a grade crossing. The light was right for a late afternoon shot, which is something of an issue with northbounds in the winter.

Pulling up
Title:  Pulling up
Description:  BH 1 behind an NYSW original, pulls past the switch to the Syracuse Branch as it works at Chenango Forks. This type move was by and large the only traffic on the Utica side, which years earlier had been the busy line of the Northern Division.

Couple of classics
Title:  Couple of classics
Description:  The power is one of the three NYSW GP 18s, a unit that was acquired by a number of roads, but not on the scale of, say, the GP 9. At this point, the NYSW group may be the only ones still running. It sits next to the Lackawanna station, a building noted for its elegance, as much of the DLW stations were.

Title:  Nicely framed
Description:  CL 1, the Cortland based job that worked with a crew based there that summer, is framed by the bridge carrying the long abandoned Cincinnatus branch over the Tioghnioga River. A part of the branch remains to serve asphalt producer Suit Kote, where the unit is coming from this afternoon.

On the Cincinnatus Branch
Title:  On the Cincinnatus Branch
Description:  Ive always found it interesting how many branch lines went off into the hills for short distances to serve small towns. One such line was the DLWs branch to Cincinnatus NY, about 15 miles east of Cortland. Though it was abandoned early-1940s-it had passenger trains. Youd think there would not be enough traffic to sustain it, but there, it was. There isnt much left now, just a couple of miles heading out toward Mc Graw, on which is located this Suit Kote plant, which we see being switched by GP 18 1800.

Cincinnatus branch
Title:  Cincinnatus branch
Description:  The DLW had a branch to Cincinnatus NY, southesast of Cortland that was abandoned in the early 60's. A remnant of that line was used in Cortland to reach an asphalt plant run by Suit Kote. Here we see 1800 on the Tioghnioga River bridge on the branch returning from Suit Kote.
