Pulling them out
Title:  Pulling them out
Description:  Conrail would not let NYSW and D&H change crews out on the main, so the stack trains had to be yarded. Sometimes, if there was a crew working with some time, they would use a yard engine to assist with the back up move. That is what this appears to be, since these trains rarely, if ever, went solo on over the road. It looks like an eastbound being backed down the Buffalo Runner to QD, where, once the train is on the main, it will go east, and this unit will go back to the yard.

Pushing hard
Title:  Pushing hard
Description:  A four unit set of pushers is working full out to get the coal train moving up the hill toward the tunnel. It must have been all hands on deck-there are even a pair of CSX units in the mix, probably borrowed from a recently arrived PYRP.

Solo power
Title:  Solo power
Description:  The K Line trains, for some reason, seemed to get a single unit when they ran, a practice that would carry over into CP operations a few years later. The trains were usually short-a 50 platform train was long-but I cant help but wonder how many struggled over the hills of the D&H, or stalled. This one made it all the way to Bevier St, a good sign.

Dark horse
Title:  Dark horse
Description:  An NS unit sits at the East Binghamton engine facility, waiting to go out on the next RPPY. It shares the lights with a D&H unit, and an NYSW Alco. Just another day on the D&H. The D&H hopper at far right is full of sand, supplying the sand towers at the fuel pad.
