Last train through the signals?? |
Description: |
Well, probably the last one Ill see here. Class unit KCS 3900 leading the Q KCSH splits the side by side searchlights at MP 187 near Anderson Mo late in the afternoon of Feb 26 2012. New signals have been going up in a steady southward pace, and the new lights can be seen on the ground here. Gentry and Siloam Springs got new home signals during the week of 02/20. This one is not long for the world. |

Wide view, lots of power |
Description: |
Sometimes KCS will run extra units on an empty train to balance the power used as DPUs, since they tend to accumulate in Heavener after a run down from Pittsburg, as theyre not really needed for northbounds. Thus, this empty AEPX train has seven units up front, and a BNSF Grinstein SD 70MAC on the rear just for good measure. |

Surprise DPU |
Description: |
Sixty six cars back in the train, after the freight, and ahead of the 15 two unit autoracks and 15 stack platforms was this little surprise. Not the DPU itself so much-theyre fairly common on most trains, and the Q trains typically get them mid train like this, but that its a unit that was once a common sight, and now is not seen much. The DPU today was an SD 70MAC, looking good in the snow. |

Description: |
After pulling from the siding, making for a slow start, there is a 30 MPH curve at Chewie Rd that also keeps a train from getting up to speed. The result is, I have enough time to climb the hill along US 59, another vantage point opened up when the road was widened to 4 lanes a couple of years ago. This is the H train seen from the top of the bluff. |

View from the hill |
Description: |
In the course of widening US 59 to four lanes, the right of way was opened up to accommodate the wider roadway, which meant blasting out some of the adjacent hillside south of Watts, near Chewie Rd. Getting to the top of the hills next to the road is a fairly easy thing, as you can park off road and walk up. I took advantage of this to get a shot of a southbound H train, whose power we see here just north of Chewie Rd. |
