Description:  This 553 train left Binghamton with CP 5646 leading. it must have crapped out somewhere on Belden Hill and this GP9 leader was brought up from Binghamton, or swapped off 556. Still, it looks good in clean paint, even if the delay has now put the train almost in darkness, now rolling on past GR with its 82 cars.

Grain east
Title:  Grain east
Description:  Once CP started to integrate operation of the D&H systemwide, a 390 was established that ran from Minneapolis to Port of Albany. This train often got SOO power a lot of the time in solid sets. Todays effort is a mix of power, including one of CP's ex NS SD40-2's that was made into a B unit-note the 4th unit with blanked windows-as we see it passing signal 223-1 wrong main on the last lap into Binghamton with a typical train of 91 cars.

Description:  The CP crew has just about completed their run and will be relieved shortly as the arrive at Binghamton with 85 platforms of train 254 headed for Jersey. As usual, the consist is a wild one, including an SD45, getting hard to find this late in history, and one of CP's homebuilt B units, from an ex Southern SD40-2. The Erie station once sat in the foreground of this photo. It was razed shortly after Conrails start up in 1976

Description:  Well not exactly. LIRR had some work done on several units at Super Steel Schenectady. They were routed home via a roundabout trip through Binghamton. Heres one trailing on 252, about to enter East Binghamton. This is probably one of the more unlikely combinations: SOO and LIRR lashed up.

On slower freight days, some trains would be combined, usually the intermodals with the carload trains, such as this combined 553/270, carrying 57 cars of intermodal for Montreal and a 23 car block for Guilford at Mechanicville.

Description:  The east end of Ayers Rd is well known. It was the location of the famous Tioga Center semaphores, just west of the grade crossing there. The other end is not as well known, but still photo worthy. The deck was removed from the bridge around 1990, eliminating it as a platform for taking photos; it was a popular spot during EL days. We see 419 rolling underneath with 42 cars behind its four units.

Description:  One of the vestiges of the old days that was still hanging on into the modern era was this telltale. It once extended across the LV Auburn Branch to warn of the impending Ayers Rd bridge. Almost 30 years after that line became a gravel trail, the telltale remains.

Description:  Train 419-it ran to Buffalo and Toronto the days 167 didnt run, though this day'seffort still has 18 stack platforms along with its 112 cars-rolls west along the George F Highway and the Erie pole line into the afternoon sun. NS would single track this ten years later, and remove the poles. It opened up the shot, but took away one of the things that made this line interesting.

Description:  The stiffest part of the climb to Belden tunnel is between here and the tunnel. Three SDs should not tax 165s train of 46 cars too hard, but theyre still making a great sound as they dig into that last pull.
