Making a run for it |
Description: |
Train 413s six units are pulling hard to lift 128 cars to Belden tunnel. That non-dynamic brake ex B&M GP 40 won't be much help on the downhill side of the tunnel, as its lack of DB's will prevent the use of them on the trailing three units. |

413 surprise |
Description: |
SOO units on 413 were not a big deal. The trailing unit, however, was another story. The GP 9 rebuilds were almost exclusively assigned to yard and local jobs by this time, so seeing one on a road train was quite unusual. There must have been no other options at Binghamton this morning, as there is one trailing the lead SOO SD 60. They got over the hill in good form with 48 cars. |

Odd mix |
Description: |
Train 413 heads north behind an odd mix of power. SOO SD60s were not a big deal on road trains, but the GP9s were-and this one is one of the few painted for eastern lines subsidiary St Lawrence & Hudson. The yardmaster must have been scraping for anything he could get that morning. 48 cars was not taxing the units. |

Squeeze under |
Description: |
The last mile or so up to the tunnel is a long curve as the tracks gain elevation from Moototwn Rd to the tunnel entrance. In so doing, they pass over Tunnel Road via this old stone bridge. Its narrow, and visibility is quite limited, making a mad chase here a bit of a challenge, as the road zig zags under the tracks. For most northbounds, its not a big deal-even slowing for the bridge doesnt hurt your chase when the train is only making 15 MPH. Train 413s leader passes overhead as I look up. Ill beat him the last 1/2 mile to the tunnel with no problem. |

High bridge from the "wrong" side |

Most photos of the bridge at Harpursville show he view from where the former Penn Division crossed NY 7. In the longer days of the year, late in the day a photo could be worked from the north side of the bridge, from a parking area on NY 235. Here we see such a view of train 413, which apparently got a late start-its nomally a morning departure out of Binghamton, with 104 cars. |

Barn on the bridge |
Description: |
A CP red barn leads train 165 over the high bridge and Wylie Creek with 94 cars. The D&H was noted in its later years for having a multitude of paint schemes, so much so that it was hard to find a train with a matched set of power. It was perhaps fitting that CP should take them over; they did not seem to match the sets either-this train has three units, three paint schemes. Or is it the D&H influence on CP that's showing?? |

There was a siding here, the signal mast of which can be seen above the first container on this 165, today with 44 stack platforms and 40 freight. The south end was just north of the I 88 overpass. It came out shortly after the CP takeover. Im sure the dispatchers missed it, although I would imagine crews who had to hold there with a northbound, did not!! |

Morning on the hill |
Description: |
Mid morning was usually a good bet to catch 413 heading north. I was driving for Broome Transit at the time, and usually did a three hour morning shift with a split in the middle of the day. The happy result was that I often could catch 413, and sometimes 168, going north. Today was one of those days, with a 42 car train at Depot Hill Rd. Today we have a surprise, an ex CN GP 40 widecab going back to Pan Am. |
