Once CP acquired the D&H, they made a big deal of the fact that they now had a through route for grain traffic from the midwest to the Atlantic in the United States, though part of that route was through Canada. They dubbed it the "Niagara Connection" for its border crossing at Niagara Falls. The first "official" train, complete with power from the three component roads, D&H 7309 leading, had a press release and ceremony noting its crossing at Niagara, even though the trains actually started running between Minneapolis and Albany the previous October. We see the first train at Dalton NY, near MP 352. I was travelling from Buffalo with some colleagues from work, so this was the only photo I was able to get. |

I always got a kick out of this |

There were several NS trains that ran on CP south of Binghamton. One of them was 41T, an Enola-Toronto train that came up through CPs East Binghamton yard before gaining the NS Southern Tier Line at BD. It usually had CN power, and I loved the irony of the competitor using the same tracks. It was even better when 41T would run through as CP was getting one of their own trains out. Today is one of those days, as CP 419's power is moving onto the 1 runner from the north end of the shop, as 41T rolls its 75 cars through the yard behind a solid set of CN units. |

Skies in the Southern Tier are famously cloudy, and days on end of solid overcast are not uncommon. Some days are hit and miss, wiith gaps in the clouds providing a glimpse of sun. Here train 167 catches one of the holes and a burst of sun as it approaches Devils Elbow, a section along the Susquehanna River that passes around a rock outcrop between Owego and Tioga Center. |
