Old roundhouse
Title:  Old roundhouse
Description:  I found the MILW yard and roundhouse while passing through Mason City. There was a lot of power there, including a MILW Hiawatha SD 40-2, which unfortunately was not where I could get a good photo. Still, the facilities here harken to another era, with the roundhouse still in service, and the spreader at far left.

First official train
Title:  First official train
Description:  Once CP acquired the D&H, they made a big deal of the fact that they now had a through route for grain traffic from the midwest to the Atlantic in the United States, though part of that route was through Canada. They dubbed it the "Niagara Connection" for its border crossing at Niagara Falls. The first "official" train, complete with power from the three component roads, D&H 7309 leading, had a press release and ceremony noting its crossing at Niagara, even though the trains actually started running between Minneapolis and Albany the previous October. We see the first train at Dalton NY, near MP 352. I was travelling from Buffalo with some colleagues from work, so this was the only photo I was able to get.

Grain west
Title:  Grain west
Description:  A pair of SOO units leads a westbound 391 empty grain train from the Port of Albany past signal 219-1 along the George F Highway in Endwell. The train would have a surprise on the rear.

Alls well
Title:  Alls well
Description:  Nothing completes a train like a caboose. By 1991, they were quite unusual on road trains; this day we got lucky, catching a SOO car on the end of 391.

Title:  413 with Soo power and a rebuilt SD45

Four 40s with a surprise
Title:  Four 40s with a surprise
Description:  A set of 4 SD40-2s, not uncommon at the time, has a surprise. The second unit is one of the NS ex Southern units they made into a cabless locomotive by removing the controls and blanking the windows. This is train 418 arriving from Buffalo with 48 cars.
