Caught him
Title:  Caught him
Description:  I had started out with a southbound that met an empty grain train at Siloam; now there was another meet in the mix, the same southbound meeting this empty grain train. I had heard them talking about the meet on the radio, and went south to see if I could intercept the northbound. I was able to get him just as he reached the crossing north of Westville,

Description:  The northbound grain move approaches signal 238-0, showing approach, as it will take the siding there, to meet the southbound holding the main. Interestingly, the defect detector here an MP 238 still announces "KCS detector." The detector at Davidson Road, north of Siloam, MP 226.7, has announced CPKC for a couple of months.

As far as we get today
Title:  As far as we get today
Description:  The southbound rolls past farm fields as it makes its way south into gathering gloom. Sometimes, even though the "chase is on," it doesn't get very far. I caught two at Siloam, and another meeting this train at Watts. I'd have stayed with this one longer, but the clouds were moving in for late afternoon/evening thunderstorms.

Quick turn around
Title:  Quick turn around
Description:  My wife does Bible study with a group of ladies on Thursday afternoons, so I take the opportunity to go after anything that shows up while shes out. Not five minutes after she left the house, I heard a horn, which sounded like a northbound. I got out, taking her Dodge Stratus R/T, and headed into town. As I reached Lake Frances Rd, I saw a southbound coal train rolling toward Watts. I made a quick U turn, and headed for Westville, working back toward Watts. I made it about two miles up, when I saw the train headed south. A quick turn around later, I shot him from the shoulder of US 59, and took off.

On the creek
Title:  On the creek
Description:  The DPU crosses Baron Creek, in another shot taken from the car window. I love driving the Dodge, but getting in and out of the low slung car quickly is now a challenge for my six foot, 240 pound body with bad ankles and stiff joints. Sometimes I yield to the effects of advancing decrepitude. Its now late enough in the year that the sun does not come around to the west side of the bridge til very late in the day, and then the shadows of twilight are taking over.

DPUs, finally
Title:  DPUs, finally
Description:  I had been trying to get some good shots of the head end, and knew if I waited for the DPU at Westville, the shot at Baron was in question. After the signal shot, the only shot to do on the creek, and here at CR E 754 was the DPU. It was getting toward 1400, and I wanted to get heading back, since we had to go to Coweta OK for my grandsons football game. Notable, is the three unit set of DPU's, all BNSF. Usually there are a couple of KCS units added at Pittsburg.

Not a good start
Title:  Not a good start
Description:  I cant always hear the trains blowing for the crossings in town when Im in the house, which, during the day, keeps out the outside noise pretty well. So I had the scanner on the table while I was reading Sundays paper. The radio came to life, a northbound calling the home signal at South Siloam Springs. I grabbed a soda and took off, playing catch up as I went north. My first encounter was the rear of 181 going away at Davidson Road. Id catch him by Gentry. The grade coming out of Sleepy Hollow gets most of them down on their knees, even the more spirited engineers, and this one turned out to be.

Not by much
Title:  Not by much
Description:  As I said, this was an inspired engineer. This spot is just to the north of the Dorsey siding, and often there will be meets here. Usually theres some chatter when that occurs, but there was nothing but the train calling the North Dorsey signal, and a horn. I got here with about enough time to back the car in, and walk out on the Wolf Creek bridge.

Title:  Another close one
Description:  After the shot at Ark 59, I have to really hustle to get the train at Noel. The easiest shot is at Butler Creek, where theres a low water bridge, and its really a better southbound shot, but has the best access of several locations there. I beat the train, getting this shot from the crossing.

Out of the shadows
Title:  Out of the shadows
Description:  The I 181 rolls north along MO 59 approaching Anderson, catching the last spot of sun along the route as it rolls out of the shadow of a ridge west of the line. This was a spirited chase. Two units had 37 stack platforms, 20 autos, and 6 articulated racks, and made good time. I didn't beat him here by much; note the railfan chase vehicle hastily parked on the shoulder!!

This is not the 4877 you are looking for
Title:  This is not the 4877 you are looking for
Description:  It was inevitable that, sooner or later, I would come across the 4877. Unfortunately, not the celebrated Tuscan red GG 1-though I did see and ride behind it over 40 years ago-but the KCS ES 44 that is just another GE in the fleet. I was returning from the I 181 chase, and happened upon this northbound M 261 just as I rolled into downtown Gravette. Hes got 57 cars in tow as he rolls into the gathering gloom. In an odd twist, second unit CP 8769 is the second CP 8769 I've seen; the other was an RS 18 at Mechanicville on the D&H in 1984.

Got him
Title:  Got him
Description:  Just like the day before, I heard the horn and took off. I wasnt able to catch the train in Siloam, but did get ahead to get the shot here on Main St in Gentry. My luck ran out about two minutes later, when I pulled out onto Ark 59. I made it up to CP North Gentry easily enough, then got bogged down in a back up behind a guy in a tractor who decided 1630 on a Monday was a good time to go out onto a busy two lane road with few passing zones, doing every bit of 20 MPH. When I caught up to him, I could still see the 261 train pulling away, and my chance of getting a shot at Decatur or Gravette going away quickly.

Finally some sun
Title:  Finally some sun
Description:  And a little warmth, too. The weekend had been dismal, 50s washout rain, then cold. By Wednesday, it had warmed up a bit, into the 50s with screaming sun. I heard a southbound horn, and beat a path out of the house and headed for Westville. Finding nothing there, and a dark signal, I worked up to Watts. Upon arrival, I heard CP 8930 south calling the dispatcher. Cool, got him, now leading a southbound grain train off the Illinois River bridge at Watts.

From the high ground

Description:  I was able to get ahead of him, due to a slow order south of Chewie Rd, and grabbed this shot from the old US 59 alignment.

Close in
Title:  Close in
Description:  I got sandbagged by slowpokes coming down from Westville, and missed the shot at the crossing in Baron, but was able to catch up before he got to the crossing near MP 252. I was hoping for a little more color, but its a bit early yet for this far south. I got the train in the trees, even if they are mostly green.

Wider view
Title:  Wider view
Description:  A wider view from the same spot. Hopefully in a week or two, I can do this shot with some foliage, which is notoriously lackluster in these parts.
