Surprise
Title:  Surprise
Description:  I took off south, to find the 262 train had arrived at Watts, and was holding the main. As I drove into town, I heard the detector at MP 238 go off. Crap, hell probably be here before I can catch him in good light. I was right, The head end was already coming up the siding, it was the 261 train, coming in with 80 cars, blocked by its southbound counterpart. Not that it mattered; the angle I had was the "dark" side for both trains. My only hope was the northbound would pull up past the end of the southbound, and I could get him north of the yard office. I lucked out on that one, getting the power just as it peeked out behind the 262, but its ridiculously backlit. Oh well....five minutes faster, Id have had a nicely lit shot near MP 237, south of the yard.

Late day sun
Title:  Late day sun
Description:  Now that were into November, the shadows come early. In July, this is an easy, well lit shot. Now I have to play with the light. The southbound rolls on, near MP 239, along US 59.

Favorite spot
Title:  Favorite spot
Description:  One of several spots I like to shoot is just south of the intersection of US 59 and Chewie Rd, where theres a nice S curve on both the road and railroad. This shot was opened up when US 59 was widened to four lanes a few years back-like about 7 now. Its a good shot of the train coming around the curve, but as youll see in the next few shots, its starting to get overgrown.

Nose on
Title:  Nose on
Description:  I try not to do the standard 3/4 wedge at the crossing shot; its not all that imaginitive. It does, with good lighting, work quite well, though. The speed restriction coming out of MP 239 is a godsend for a chaser-as is the 65 MPH speed limit on the highway-and this was an easy shot to get.

Past the mill
Title:  Past the mill
Description:  This used to be a Hudson Foods facility, where feed was processed. Hudson years ago went into Tyson, but the mill is still active. It makes a good photo prop for a train coming past, as we see here with the 262.

Downtown
Title:  Downtown
Description:  I dont usually do this shot; there are much more scenic views north of town. But its occasionally good to get a shot of the local scene. In this case, its the Langley feed mill, whose silos are just to the right of the train and its 75 cars.

Not quite
Title:  Not quite
Description:  I caught the head end of the 261 train, now a little less backlit, since the sun had come around some since I left to follow the 262 south. He has the ditch lights on, but was backing up when I left. Wish Id given him five more minutes; he left shortly after this, and would have made for a nice shot on the Illinois River a mile to the north.

Slow clear
Title:  Slow clear
Description:  As many times as Ive been over this bridge-its the US 412 overpass over the KCS-I have only rarely seen the siding signal cleared. I had heard a northbound blowing for Lake Frances Rd, only to find when I got there that the train was already up into town, but there was a southbound. I swung around to shoot that train, and was able to get a shot of the slow clear on the dwarf signal.

What was that engine number??
Title:  What was that engine number??
Description:  Having shot the southbound at Siloam, I turned my attention and car northbound, hoping to catch up to the oil train. I did, but not til Mt Olive Rd between the north end of Dorsey siding and Gravette. So here it is-CP 8561 north. Wait, what was the engine number leading the coal train?? BNSF 8561. If only Id gotten away from the house five minutes faster, I could have shot a meet between two trains with the same engine number, albeit different roads. What a hoot that would have been!!

Another recycling trip
Title:  Another recycling trip
Description:  It was a nice day, 50s and sun, with snow/clouds in store for the next several days, and I had all the boxes and such from Christmas overflowing my bins, so it was time. I dumped all the recycling, and went to check signals. As I was approaching Davidson Rd, I saw a southbound. I did better than last time, catching him at Country Club Rd, a KCSM unit leading a CP unit at 63 cars past the Cobb mill.

Just as I suspected
Title:  Just as I suspected
Description:  The southbound was rolling slowly down the main at Watts, coming to a stop at the home signal at the south end of the yard. I figured there was a meet in the offing, and was correct. As I came around the curve at MP 237, the 261 train was almost in my face with a pair of GEs and 87 cars.

Peek-a-boo
Title:  Peek-a-boo
Description:  The head end of the 262 train sneaks around the curve and into view at MP 237. For a brief moment I considered running up to the Illinois River bridge to shoot the 261 train, which at this time of day is a beautiful, well lit shot, and would have been worthy with a pair of fairly clean KCS units, but decided to go with the southbound, which was well lit, and which I wanted to follow to Westville. Ill get more chances at the bridge shot.

Title:  Caught him, but this will be a short chase
Description:  Wed taken a day to go up to Joplin for a couple of things, and just to get out on one of the nicer days weve had after snow and bone chilling cold. On the return, we got off I 49 at the Anderson exit, turning south onto MO 59. As we went under the bridge just south of the ramp, there was a train rolling south. He beat us to Splitlog, but we got ahead at Anderson, and caught him going past the feed mill, dodging the shadows.

Title:  Barely into the light
Description:  The sun was getting low-though there was more daylight than a month ago, this shot would not have been possible-as the southbound grain move rolled into Lanagan. I dont usually get a shot here, as I typically go for the bridge shot at Ginger Blue, but I wasnt sure there would be light there. Were rolling along MO 59 here, past the entrance to Bonebrake Park.

Title:  Took a while
Description:  I was home, and heard a horn coming from a northbound working uphill from Watts. This should be a fairly easy quest, so I went a got a soda and headed out. By the time I got up into town, he was already on Lincoln Av, and I was playing catch up. Heavy traffic at Gentry, and a couple of slowpokes, and I had just caught up to his head end at Gravette. Finally, Im ahead enough to set up, getting this shot off the Ark 59 overpass of the 261 train behind 4 units.

It started with a horn in the distance
Title:  It started with a horn in the distance
Description:  I was outside working on some yard task, when I heard a horn off to the south. I took off for town to see what was up. A check of the signal at South Siloam Springs showed a restricting-see the Track and Signals album for that sequence-so a northbound will be taking the siding. By the time I got into position, the train-it was the 181, whose back end we see here-was already too far up for me to get a good shot, and the southbound you see here had passed the detector up at Davidson Rd. I set up on the US 412 bridge, and shot the back end meet.

Title:  Southbound grain close up
Description:  The grain train rolls its 105 cars under the US 412 overpass, and heads down the hill to Watts. Should have let him go, and followed the 181, which had a pair of Belles, the leader a KCSM AC 44 leading, up to Gentry. Youll see why shortly.

Description:  The grain train I shot at Siloam made it as far as Watts, where he held the main-for about 45 minutes. He was waiting on an empty northbound coal train. I could have shot the 181 in Gentry and still made it back here for the meet. So it goes , another day of railfanning.

Title:  To the nines.
Description:  I headed down to Westville to see if I could catch the coal train coming north. After a bit of a wait, he showed, a TXUX train with a UP leader, and both units ending in "99". The power on coal trains mixes a lot more lately than it used to; these trains used to get solid BNSF consists, with KCS power added to get them over the hilly Heavener Sub. We see it north of Westville.
