Description:  D&H 5017, the last of the RS 36s, works the south end of East Binghamton. This unit would hang on a couple more years before finally being retired. It was the last D&H Alco in service.

New life
Title:  New life
Description:  Museums and tourist roads often are a second life for cast off road power, and Alcos are popular. In this case, an ex D&H RS 36 has been spared from the torch, working on a line it is familiar with, at North Creek, itself taking on a second, post D&H existence.

Description:  This photo has a couple of classics. The Alco is always a draw, but check out that box car. Wish I had gotten a photo of the whole car, which was still in full Nickel Plate paint a dozen years after being folded into NW.

Power to head south
Title:  Power to head south
Description:  RPPY and PYRP ran with a mix of CSX and NS power south of Binghamton, though it was usually one or the other, and rarely mixed. This time its NS power, a representative example seen here at the fuel rack. Where else but Binghamton could you find EMD, GE, and Alco all coupled to each other??

Now were working
Title:  Now were working
Description:  Train 310 smokes hard as it works to overcome gravity as it heads north at Phelps St. The leader is one of the EMD test beds built in the mid 60's to evaluate the 645 engine, hence the flared radiators.

Title:  Hey, look at that!!
Description:  Train 310 carried a surprise in the power consist this morning, D&H 5022. Always good to see an Alco on the road. It's working just as hard as the rest of the power in this three builder lash up.

Old power rules
Title:  Old power rules
Description:  One of the remaining D&H RS 36s rolls a 556 south across the diamond at BD as it heads into East Binghamton. The RS 36s did not see the road often at this point, and it would have been a very unlikely leader, though CP was not shy about running Alcos in regular service. My guess is the crew on this train came down with the PLM unit leading, and was on short time. If there was no room at the inn, the East Binghamton yardmaster likely had him tie up at Bevier St and taxied the crew to the yard. Then 5022 was sent over to get the train once there was space.

Crossing the swollen river
Title:  Crossing the swollen river
Description:  The NYSW ran trains for the Marathon Maple Festival for a number of years in the 80s and 90s, using whatever power was available and clean, usually Alcos, though in later years it was the 142 and a variety of SD 45s. This train had Alcos fore and aft, and we see D&H 5023, the one with the best paint, cleaned up and leading the first train for the 1989 weekend across the Chenango River, close to overflowing its banks due to spring runoff.

309 looks a lot like 556
Title:  309 looks a lot like 556
Description:  Except for the NYSW unit leading. Even a year into the CP operation of the D&H, NYSW power still showed up on a variety of trains that were not the normal stack train run throughs from Jersey to Buffalo. Here we have one of the B 40s leading 309 with three more units and 42 cars, coming through BX into East Binghamton from Mechanicville. There are two notable units in the consist. PLM 3041 is one of the EMD 645 engine test bed units, and trailing is one of the few RS 36's left on the roster, 5023.
