Title:  MP 250

Hard to get
Title:  Hard to get
Description:  There was a semaphore on track 2, 245-2, that you had to cross a field to reach. As a result, I did not shoot it much. Heres a from the road look as 391 passes, the board seen between the two diesels.

391 and another semaphore
Title:  391 and another semaphore
Description:  There were a lot of Erie semaphores still in service at the time. This is the third one I shot this train with that day. The pipe hanging down from the signal was for the hot box detector indicator light, now removed since new radio alarm detectors had been installed a couple years before.

Arriving from Jersey
Title:  Arriving from Jersey
Description:  Train 255, the Saturday Sea Land train originating at Little Ferry as SLN 5 on the NYSW, rolls through BD as it approaches the NYSW office for a crew change as the faithful observe from trackside. This was a pretty reliable late morniing arrival at Binghamton, and I will spend several hours following this train west. By this time, CP power running through to Jersey was pretty common. Today's power set is an interesting mix of hand me downs. The leader is an ex GATX leaser that came from MP originally; the second unit is an ex Greater Winnipeg Water District unit; the SOO unit is original to the road, the only such on today's train; and the trailing unit is an ex KCS unit. We got lucky today, as two of the used units have been repainted, making for a much more attractive train. The Dicks Sporting Goods store is the original one in the chain and is still open there.

Lumber Rd
Title:  Lumber Rd
Description:  One of the best locations you cant shoot from anymore is the Lumber Rd overpass in Gang Mills. It was at the east throat of the yard, and offered a great view of westbounds most of the day. You could also watch some of the yard action, and see the engine house. When NY rebuilt US 15/NY 417-the highway to the left-the bridge was removed, making shots like this impossible. The bare spot on the hillside in the distance is where the NY 17 bypass is being built. It will take through traffic off Dennison Highway for the short stretch it still ran downtown in Corning, part of the project that will enable NY 17 to become I 86. It will open in October 1995, to everyones relief-especially the fans, since it will allow the chase to continue with a hope of catching a train before reaching Addison.

Rolling to BD
Title:  Rolling to BD
Description:  Train 261 typically got SOO SD60s. To balance the trailer pool-the trains carried more eastbound traffic than westbound-some days a 261X would run. This train seemed to get older power, usually SOO SD40s. Todays extra is typical, rolling off the Susquehanna River with a pair of SOO SD40-2s pulling 82 TOFC and 6 COFC cars. As was fairly common, its late morning on a Saturday, and I will spend most of the afternoon chasing this train west. The big building behind the train is the Binghamton Psychiatric Center.

First SOO power
Title:  First SOO power
Description:  Since the first grain train ran to the Port of Albany, we had been waiting for this day. The grain trains originated in Minneapolis, so we knew it was a matter of time before power from CP owned SOO Line came east. It finally happened on a Thursday night, the train going to Albany after darkness had fallen. The return trip, however was a home run. We could not have asked for a better situation. Clear sky, and the train called for 1330, setting up a westbound chase in perfect light. We followed him to Hornell. It was great. ABBU sits at the south end of Bevier St with two SOO units trailing CP 5674.

Wide open
Title:  Wide open
Description:  The telephoto view from this vantage point homes in on the train and livestock. In this wider view we see how open the valley is here, and why it got to be called Big Flats. The train is on the ex Erie. The DLW here is gone without a trace, 31 years after the line went out of service.

Taken by surprise
Title:  Taken by surprise
Description:  ABBU had passed signal 325-1 and was slowly working toward downtown Hornell. The crowd on the bridge-look at the shadows-was focused on the approaching SOO units, and not paying attention to what was coming up behind. Suddenly BUOI popped out from under the bridge, making this meet shot.

Meet at BD
Title:  Meet at BD
Description:  Eastbound 270 behind SOO power is about to meet the NYSW Sea Land train that is about to change crews and head for Buffalo. The 270 will head into East Binghamton across the river, get switched, and then roll north to Mohawk. This photos shows part of the layout at BD. The tracks to the left are the former DLW main, with the line going across to the Court St overpass and under SLN5 is the former DLW Syracuse and Utica line, now used by CP to get to the D&H. Conrail ownership of what had been tracks 3(farthest) and 4(closest to the camera) started here. They were, respectivelt, the 2 and 1 running tracks on the CP, leading over the Susquehanna River to their East Binghamton yard, a former DLW facility. Conrail had redisgnated tracks 3 and 4 to the Johnson Runnng Track and DL 4 respectively bhy this time.

SOO and ice
Title:  SOO and ice
Description:  No, not the Iowa Chicago & Eastern, it had not been invented then. We see train 261 along the ice choked Chemung River at Wellsburg during a thaw that caused a lot of runoff and resulting ice backups on local rivers.
