Rolling in the sun |
Description: |
For a late afternoon northbound, there were not too many decently lit shots going north. One that worked was this view at Afton, where there was enough angle to shoot from the shoulder of NY 7. We see a PLMT rolling toward the signal at GR behind a mix of power. |

Hold em back |

This D&H unit was trailing RPPY at Crocker Hill Rd in Port Crane, presumably for dynamic braking, but it may also just be a pusher being returned to Binghamton. Sometimes a northbound would drop a helper at Afton if there was a southbound coming fairly soon, with that train taking it back down the hill. |

NYSW tried whenever possible to run its own power in the lead. Sometimes that meant one of the F 45s, which was always a treat. Todays MEBU has 3636 leading at BX, about to cross CR at BD. The signal governed the long out of service crossing of the EL and D&H here on a diamond. Now it's a pair of crossovers. |

Pulling them out |
Description: |
Conrail would not let NYSW and D&H change crews out on the main, so the stack trains had to be yarded. Sometimes, if there was a crew working with some time, they would use a yard engine to assist with the back up move. That is what this appears to be, since these trains rarely, if ever, went solo on over the road. It looks like an eastbound being backed down the Buffalo Runner to QD, where, once the train is on the main, it will go east, and this unit will go back to the yard. |

Solo power |
Description: |
The K Line trains, for some reason, seemed to get a single unit when they ran, a practice that would carry over into CP operations a few years later. The trains were usually short-a 50 platform train was long-but I cant help but wonder how many struggled over the hills of the D&H, or stalled. This one made it all the way to Bevier St, a good sign. |

Mismatch |
Description: |
D&H 7303 is pushing a pair of Conral SD 40s toward East Binghamton. Not sure what occasioned this unusual move, but my guess would be some kind of mechanical issue that required a shop, as it was more than could be handled by a service truck. |

Southbound picnic train |
Description: |
The south end picnic train crosses the Harpursville bridge en route back to Binghamton and Taylor. Don't know what those two on the gangway of CP 775, a former SOO unit, are doing out there while the train is rolling. |

D22 returns |
Description: |
D 22 was the old SU 2. It worked west to Owego two days per week to service the Owego & Harford, and the other days ran Binghamton to Oneonta, as well as doing any local work in the Binghamton area. It almost always got 4 axle power, often one of the D&H units. Here it enters Binghamton yard behind a "golden rodent" and a lightning stripe GP38-2. |

Framed in the chain link |
Description: |
D 22 crosses over from track 1 to 2 to the Buffalo Runner as it heads up to Bevier St behind a pair of lightning stripe GP 38s from the M-K rebuild a dozen years earlier. The City of Binghamton had done some rehab work on the overpass a few years earlier and put up a chain link fence, which limited the ability to take photos, from it. The mesh was tight enough that this was the result. |
