The reason why
Title:  The reason why
Description:  There is a Conrail XCL empty coal train waiting behind me at CP Horn for this 120 platform DHT 6(NYK 6) to cross over from 1 to 2 so it can go west past the Hornell station, then west on the Erie main to Olean. NYK 6 has run the "fast track" from CP River, for which I'm sure the crew was grateful. Track 2, the slow track, was all 25 and 10 MPH from CP River, 30 miles away at MP 359.

Grain west
Title:  Grain west
Description:  ABBU was an empty grain train from the Port of Albany that ran as needed. As such, it was not a priority, and ran when a crew was available, so it would often get yarded at Binghamton. This one is now crewed and rolling out, and will shortly be headed west on the Tier.

NYK stacks
Title:  NYK stacks
Description:  One of the several double stack train that NYSW ran was for NYK. Trains were symbolled NY 7 west and NY 8 east. This is NY 8 coming into East Binghamton on track 3 from Buffalo. It will get a crew change, and likely add cars for the Southern Division here. Once that is complete, it will back out through BD onto the Tier for the trip east.

Shaky HAN
Title:  Shaky HAN
Description:  HAN 1 rolls west along the Susquehanna on a day gloomy enough to make the power blur as it goes past. The NS unit was a surprise. NYSW had enough power most of the time that they did not need to run NS or CSX power through to Jersey any more, and it had become unusual to see it in Bingamton by this time. It would have a resurgence later in the 90s as stack traffic increased, and the 20 CSX financed B 40s went back to them after the CP purchase of the D&H.

The other side of town
Title:  The other side of town
Description:  While the semaphores here got almost all the attention-justifiably-there was also another Erie relic in town. Unbeknownst to many, there was an Erie station still standing here. It was in pretty bad shape by 1990, but still up. NYK 6 passes with 60 stack platforms behind a pair of yellowjackets.

Description:  Another one of those "bigfoot and the Easter bunny" combinations, one that "wont ever happen," is here at Binghamton on BUME, about to hit BD and head for the yard. A North Shore CF 7, probably here for more extensive work than its home shop can do, trails the NYSW leader.

NYK 6
Title:  NYK 6
Description:  NYSW continued to aggressively pursue international container traffic, and Walter Rich was pretty successful at it. This is NYK 6, and eastbound move for NYK steamship lines, though there are some Hanjins on the head end of the 65 platform train. A pair of B 40s has the train headed for Starrucca and Jersey, rolling past the water plant and Willow Run Foods at Kirkwood.

Foggy morning train
Title:  Foggy morning train
Description:  NYSW ran all kinds of excursions. Walter Rich was a railfan, and used the railroad to his advantage to show shippers the facilities, as well as running excursions. Not sure what this one was for. We see a pair of B 40s at the former DLW station at Kingsley, well hidden in the gray of morning fog.

Description:  There is quite the crowd at the East Binghamton fuel pad today. NYSW and/D&H units bracket a new arrival, a GP39-2 rebuilt at M-K Mountaintop. This was a program undertaken by NYSW to update several units and repaint them into the D&H lighning |tripe scheme. Two other 39s were done, 7403 and 7407, as well as several GP38-2s. Gaining speed
Title:  Gaining speed
Description:  13T rolls toward the PA 706 underpass, picking up speed as it heads down the old DLW. The BNSF unit is notable, though not uncommon on this train, which seemed to get western power pretty routinely. The trailing unit is the real surprise, a B40-8. NS did not have many of these, and none purchased by NS itself. This is a legacy CR unit.

TV 7 four motors
Title:  TV 7 four motors
Description:  Conrail had a lot of 4 axle power, which made sense here on the Water Level Route, which, as the name implies, had virtually no grades. Even as it went on a 6 axle spree, acquiring several hundred C40-8s and SD60s of a couple of variations, it ran a lot of its van trains with 4 motors, as we see on TV 7 with 68 cars here at Wanakah, west of Buffalo.

Waiting on a westbound
Title:  Waiting on a westbound
Description:  TV 200 sits back from CP Coles as it waits for a westbound train to come off the single track to the east. The smokestack in the background is the power plant for the state hospital, once an Erie and EL customer. The track used to unload the coal that fired it is still in place next to Court St, but now heavily overgrown.

Last chance
Title:  Last chance
Description:  After a day of chasing NW 611 on a trip from Buffalo to Conneaut OH, we called it a day and headed home. Our last shot of the day was this TV 79, which had left North Bergen NJ that morning, now rolling though Erie on its mad dash to an ATSF connection in Chicago with 95 cars of TOFC. Halfway there!!
