270 at the end of the day
Title:  270 at the end of the day
Description:  Usually 270 ran mid to late morning. Todays effort is behind, getting through Endicott in the late afternoon. It was worth the wait, thats an interesting power set. Today's train has 60 freight and 11 TOFC tacked on behind. Check out the Shawmut hoppers behind the power. They were a fairly common sight on the Tier in those days.

On the rocks
Title:  On the rocks
Description:  One place I didnt shoot a lot of trains, partly because it was hard to beat a train to it after getting the shot at Chemung, and partly because the view was in shadow much of the day, was here at Wellsburg. In the summer, in late afternoon, this shot was possible. Wish I could have shot it in good light in the winter when the rocks were iced over.

Title:  Late afternoon 557

Combined effort
Title:  Combined effort
Description:  Sometimes if there were not enough cars for two trains, 558 and 270 would be combined out of Buffalo. Such is the case here, as the 105 car train has power for both of its components, 270s power ahead, with 558s two CP units trailing. We see it at East Hornell, where it is about to meet a hi-wide Conrail extra.

Meet with Alcos on both trains
Title:  Meet with Alcos on both trains
Description:  CP still had a good sized fleet of MLWs in that period, and they often ran on the D&H. Here 553 holds the main as 556 rolls its 52 cars past with a GP9 rebuild leading a pair of C424s, passing the M636 trailing on 553.

Vanishing scene
Title:  Vanishing scene
Description:  Train 557 pases the signal at MP 249-2 as it approaches Waverly. The semaphores were scheduled to be replacesd, but the reality was that most of them between Endicott and Waverly would last into the 21st century, so they didnt vanish quite as fast as anyone expected-to our great delight. The real surprise here is the trailing unit-a GP38-2. These were not common on the D&H, though there was a period in 1994 when they showed on a regular basis. Today's train has 7 COFC and 25 stack platforms.

Mills job
Title:  Mills job
Description:  Now known as D 22, the Mills Job handled interchange of mostly gas cars with the Owego & Harford. It was a holdover from early CR days to allow what was then the Tioga Central a connection to the rest of the rail world other than Conrail. When CP gave up its trackage rights on the Tier, NS took over the interchange. Today we have an STLH unit on the run, though usually this job got a pair of engines, sometimes both were D&H lightning stripe GP 38's. There were not many units so painted, but the Binghamton area had a bunch, so this was not an uncommon sight.

Three of them
Title:  Three of them
Description:  There were relatively few units painted for the CP eastern lines subsidiary, called St Lawrence & Hudson, which encompassed the D&H and lines east of Montreal. Some of those were captive to the D&H-a handful of GP 38s and some GP 9us as well as a handful of SD 40s. It was not common to see them together for some reason, even the captive power. Occasinally, two would be on the same train; this was a rarity, D 22 rolling south with three STLH units.

413 surprise
Title:  413 surprise
Description:  SOO units on 413 were not a big deal. The trailing unit, however, was another story. The GP 9 rebuilds were almost exclusively assigned to yard and local jobs by this time, so seeing one on a road train was quite unusual. There must have been no other options at Binghamton this morning, as there is one trailing the lead SOO SD 60. They got over the hill in good form with 48 cars.

Odd mix
Title:  Odd mix
Description:  Train 413 heads north behind an odd mix of power. SOO SD60s were not a big deal on road trains, but the GP9s were-and this one is one of the few painted for eastern lines subsidiary St Lawrence & Hudson. The yardmaster must have been scraping for anything he could get that morning. 48 cars was not taxing the units.

Below the snow line
Title:  Below the snow line
Description:  D 22 rolls 19 cars north behind an SD40/GP 9 combination. Usually the consist was GP 9s or 38s. The other GP 9 must hate had a problem, since the SDs were rare on this job. Its late March, but theres still snow on the ground here. Theres a lot more at the top of Belden Hill, even as spring grudginly takes hold of upstate.

Leaning to the curve
Title:  Leaning to the curve
Description:  The line through Smithboro had a long tangent, then a curve as it came out of town and the tracks came back up to the road. It was an fasy shot of a westbound leaning into the curve giving an impression of high speed.
