Below the snow line |
Description: |
D 22 rolls 19 cars north behind an SD40/GP 9 combination. Usually the consist was GP 9s or 38s. The other GP 9 must have had a problem, since the SDs were rare on this job. Its late March, but theres still snow on the ground here. Theres a lot more at the top of Belden Hill, even as spring grudginly takes hold of upstate. |

Leaning to the curve |
Description: |
The line through Smithboro had a long tangent, then a curve as it came out of town and the tracks came back up to the road. It was an easy shot of a westbound leaning into the curve giving an impression of high speed. |

Easy pickings |
Description: |
The railroad is next to NY 17C for a good part of the trip between Endicott and Waverly, making for great access, and one of the reasons this line is so easy to chase. Heres 557 rolling west, seen from the shoulder of the road. It has just passed the signal pair at MP 242-you can see 242-2 over the first container, and 242-1 to the left of the second red box. These were a pair of semaphores up til February of that year. |

Down the valley |
Description: |
This shot near Adrian was one of many scenic locations in the Canisteo valley. It was always a good chase there, with many good shots to be had. The locals, as seen here, seemed oblivious to the passing show. Today's episode is train 557, rolling behind museum power with 20 stack platforms, 7 TOFC and 13 freight. |

Cemetery |
Description: |
For some reason, cemeteries always make an attractive train photo, perhaps because trains are so noisy and full of life, just the opposite of the serenity of a graveyard. Train 557 rolls past the small cemetery in Adrian. |

Erie station |
Description: |
The Erie station was used by the local Agway dealer for a number of years, but they either moved or went under. The station is now boarded up, and by next year there will be only a concrete pad here. |

Power change |
Description: |
This 553 train left Binghamton with CP 5646 leading. it must have crapped out somewhere on Belden Hill and this GP9 leader was brought up from Binghamton, or swapped off 556. Still, it looks good in clean paint, even if the delay has now put the train almost in darkness, now rolling on past GR with its 82 cars. |
