As frequently happens on these little jaunts, I have a train to chase back north. Today it is an empty TXUX coal train, waiting at CP North Stilwell alongside US 59. The single unit up front is augmented by two more on the rear. Usually they will move all the power to the head end on the empty moves, since there is no need for a rear DPU. Occasionally, theyll leave the power as it came down, just cutting off the KCS helpers at Heavener, which is what happened today. |

Practice is for BNSF to send the coal trains from Wyoming in a 2x1 configuration, with KCS adding DPU power on the rear at Pittsburg. I was at home working on some project or another when I heard a horn, which sounded like it was coming from a northbound. I got myself organized and out, thinking where I might shoot a northbound in the middle of the day with its unfavorable sun angle. I settled on Davidson Rd, since it gives a good side angle. Then I saw the train, an empty 124 car TXUX coal train, with six units up front. There was no way I was going to capture the whole power consist, never mind any train, so I went for the lights, in this case, crossing flashers, as the head end crossed over Davidson Rd. |
