Album Info:One of the more productive ways to get train photos, for me, anyway, is a chase. If I'm lucky, I'll get one going away from home, then catch something else coming back. Most of the time, it works best if I catch a northbound and follow it to either Noel or McElhany near Neosho, though chasing south to Stilwell and back is also a workable plan. Living in Siloam Springs, I can go either way. This album is the result of those chases.

Going away
Title:  Going away
Description:  The southbound Q train rolls away from the camera, rushing on toward Decatur, making a run for the grade that will top out six miles down the line at MP 219, two miles south of Decatur. Hed been having issues with the motors on one of the diesels, and getting to the top of the hill will be a slow process.

Spavinaw Creek
Title:  Spavinaw Creek
Description:  The first of two shots taken from the Lime Kiln Rd crossing in Gravette. The train is moving almost due north here; getting a nose lit photo here is possible only for a very short period during the longest days of the year-one of which is today, the first day of summer. This northbound empty grain train has just crossed Spavinaw Creek-the truss bridge in the distance-and is climbing into Gravette. Hes just met a southbound M train, which is most of the way to Decatur at this point. Hell be easy to catch, though as he drags the grade through town.

Title:  Spavinaw Creek wide view
Description:  The northbound empty grain move now closes in on my location at Lime Kiln Rd. This train is heading almost due north, on the longest day of the year. There is a very limited window when you can get this shot with the engine nose lit.

Finally
Title:  Finally
Description:  I had chased a northbound empty grain train from home, but with traffic being heavy at 4 PM, I was not able to get a lead on it. Fortunately for me, it was held at Dorsey for a southbound, which showed after a 30 minute wait, A KCS and BNSF GE leading 112 cars and a KCSM AC4400 south, seen here at Mt Olive Rd north of Dorsey siding.

Caught up, the chase is on
Title:  Caught up, the chase is on
Description:  I heard this southbound from the house, and took off, running down Ark 59 and US 62 into Westville. I got to the crossing there just in time to see the headlights approaching through town. I dumped the car in the lot on the west side of the tracks, and was able to get this wedge shot of a 100 car southbound grain train, with a northern visitor. Someone must have gotten their Canadian roads mixed up, so we have a CN unit instead of CP trailing. Didnt get the memo, I guess.

Close but...
Title:  Close but...
Description:  This is one of those photos you see in TRP Magazines "Close But No Cigar" section, where the shot misses the mark somehow. I had shot the head end of the train at "downtown" Baron, by the signal and grade crossing, then wanted to set up to get the DPU as it crossed Baron Creek. I may have mentioned that my camera has been acting up, and it did here, The plan was to get the DPU on the plate girder section of the bridge, which was still sunlit. The shutter hesitated, and I missed the sunny shot, but did get the power on the truss part. Oh well...would have been nice with the power in the light, and pretty sky.

Title:  Rolling to a meet
Description:  The northbound Q train is holding the main as the grain train slowly rolls down the siding, its headlight reflecting off the Q trains tank cars. Once in the clear, the Q train will start north. The grain train will hold here for a second northbound, which I could hear blowing for a crossing just to the south.

Just barely
Title:  Just barely
Description:  The sun had been in and out most of the afternoon, with large cloud banks moving past, though some were thin enough to let some light through. They lightened up enouigh here to get a decently lit shot of the northbound Q train just north of the Stilwell station. Today's effort has 9 articulated auto racks behind the power, 17 conventional auto racks and 19 stack platforms with mostly JB Hunt boxes back in the train, and 78 freight to round out a 508 axle consist.

Last chance
Title:  Last chance
Description:  I had followed the northbound Q train from Cave Springs, getting a somewhat lit shot of it at Stilwell, and hoped to get some sun on it here, hoping the sun would still be high enough to get a little light. It wasnt to be, but there was still enough light to get a shot. By the time I got to Westville, there wasnt enough light left for a good photo, so this was as far as the "and back" went today.

Finally caught up
Title:  Finally caught up
Description:  I heard a horn in the distance, and knew there was a northbound approaching from Watts. I had to finish up a couple of things at home before I could take off, and the train was already clearing Lincoln Av by the time I got close enough to see it. What with school buses, traffic and lights, I was not able to catch up to him til Y City Rd south of Decatur. Three units lead north in late day sun.

Going away
Title:  Going away
Description:  The down side of chasing this line in the afternoon is that for some shots, you have to cross to the west side of the tracks from Ark 59, and then wait for the train to pass. Such is the case here at Y City Rd. I got the last car pulling away past automatic 219-1 as it heads north.

Pretty spot
Title:  Pretty spot
Description:  This location, where the KCS crosses Kings Highway at the far south end of Noel, is a scenic spot thats easy to reach. Climbing over the broken up concrete and downed trees that are along the creek is a bit of a challenge, especially if youre intent on chasing south, as well see in the next shot. The northbound grain train Id been chasing went in the siding here to meet this train.

Last light
Title:  Last light
Description:  While the time between September and April has the best lighting, with the low sun angle, it also has some short days from November to February. That makes for some shots that just miss being nicely lit, like this shot of Q KCNL at Gravette. Missed it by that much, in the words of Maxwell Smart. Today's effort has 48 freight, 4 stack platforms, 10 auto racks, and 12 articulated auto racks.

Description:  We were coming back from Wal Mart, crossing the KCS at Lake Frances Rd. As we crossed, we looked to the south and there was an empty oil train holding out for an impending meet. In the shade
Title:  In the shade
Description:  After shooting the meet with the northbound oil train at Siloam, I took off, making good time through town-the biggest obstacle to chasing on this part of the Heavener Sub, getting through Siloam-and was able to beat the train to North Watts, but not far enough ahead to get the strarght on shot of him coming off the Illinois River bridge. I had to settle for this shot of him splitting the signals at CP North Watts. A decent shot in any event. The low sun of late fall means lots of shade here most of the day.
