Album Info:One of the more productive ways to get train photos, for me, anyway, is a chase. If I'm lucky, I'll get one going away from home, then catch something else coming back. Most of the time, it works best if I catch a northbound and follow it to either Noel or McElhany near Neosho, though chasing south to Stilwell and back is also a workable plan. Living in Siloam Springs, I can go either way. This album is the result of those chases.

Unusual aspect
Title:  Unusual aspect
Description:  A signal aspect I dont see often-it probably is displayed on a regular basis, Im just not there to see it-is on the approach signal to CP South Dorsey. The train will take the siding there, a red board at the north end.

Anticipation
Title:  Anticipation
Description:  Most signals on the KCS are approach lit, and trains going opposite the current of traffic typically will not light a signal til they pass it. For some reason, this on will light when a train is in the block, so to see this one lit is a good indication something is up. An AEPX coal train will shortly pass here.

Lined up
Title:  Lined up
Description:  I hustled down into Gentry, since you have to go all the way through town and past the schools to reach this spot, and set up for the train to arrive. A check of the switch showed it lined into SWEPCOs Flint Creek plant, where the train will be dropped. A crew will be called later to push it through the dumper.

Between the boards
Title:  Between the boards
Description:  I heard a southbound coming, so ran down to Westville OK to head him off. My typical approach is, if I don't see the train is imminent, to work north along US 59, since sometimes it's a manifest working at Watts, or is holding for a meet there. Today turned out to be both. The southbound M train sits at the south end of Watts, framed by the northbound home signals. Its waiting for a northbound empty coal train before resuming his pick up here.

Waiting...
Title:  Waiting...
Description:  I heard a horn from the house that indicated a northbound train. I got out and headed toward town. As I got near Lake Frances Rd, I saw the red of a CP unit, and realized he was holding short of the crossing. This usually indicates a meet. I took the short side trip to shoot what turned out to be an empty oil train with a clean GE leading.

Got a southbound
Title:  Got a southbound
Description:  After checking out the northbound empty oil train that was waiting south of Lake Frances Rd, I went in search of the southbound it would meet. The first place to check was the signal at Davidson Rd, which turned out to be displaying an approach indication. I set up here to wait. The equipment for the defect detector at MP 226.7 can be seen in the distance. This is a helpful feature, as it not only will alert me to a train if I'm out and about, but not near the tracks, but also gives me an axle count. A little math, I don't have to count cars.

Dragging
Title:  Dragging
Description:  The southbound grain train that inspired the approach medium signal drags up the hill from Sleepy Hollow, its 100 cars weighing down the three working units-he was having problems with trailing DPU 4044-but he made it up, a little slower than usual, but got there. Hed swap out the bad unit at Watts with a northbound coal train.

Description:  This shot and the next two show the medium approach aspect, a flashing yellow. Per the KCS signal rules, proceed reducing speed to 35 MPH before passing next signal. The next signal is CP North Siloam Springs, which will be displaying approach, a steady yellow, since the signal at South Siloam Springs will be red, as there will be a northbound coming in for a meet. This is the light on, followed by the dark board, then lit again. The signal is at Davidson Rd in Siloam Springs, and is showing this indication in advance of the signal at CP North Siloam Springs, which is just north of the Tahlequah St crossing.

Peeking through the trees
Title:  Peeking through the trees
Description:  I dont normally post shots like this. I prefer-as does most of the world-a clear shot with no obstructions. But the scene of water and cliff was too tempting, even with the tree cover. KCS 4810 leads a northbound empty TXUX train just south of Noel. Now get me a chain saw!!
