Backing in |
Description: |
At this zime, Conrail would not let NYSW change crews out on the main for the D&H to take the train west. This was not without some justification, as the new crew could be anywhere from ten minutes to ten hours from getting on the train. As a result, NYSW had to back its train up into Bevier St, or onto their Utica Branch for the crew change. SLN 5 is doing just that at QD with three ex BN SD 45s. There more than enough room for the 55 Sea Land stacks and 18 freight. Lead unit 6366 doesn't seem to be sure what railroad it wants to run for. |

Description: |
I had just shot TV 301 here 27 minutes earlier in good sun. Now SLN 5 shows up, and its cloud city. Such is the fickle weather of the Southern Tier. Three SD 45s do the job today, a familiar sight to anyone who watched the EL run here. It's a good bet at least one of these units was here under BN ownership. |

NY 10 Panorama |
Description: |
I must have climbed up on one of the yard buildings or something to get this-try doing that nowadays!! This overhead view shows the NY 10 that had been waiting at QD behind a pair of ST units, now with the NYSW power on and ready to back out onto the Tier at QD for the trip east. It also shows the scenic beauty of the Southern Tier, which on a nice day can be really appealing. Its a truly beautiful place when its not raining. We're looking south from Bevier St(the actual street, not just the yard). The overpass is I 81/NY 17; the hills beyond are south of the Susquehanna River. In the right place, they afford a stunning view of downtown, or Vestal, depending on where you are. |

Waiting for the new crew |
Description: |
NY 10 is pulled up into Bevier St yard awaiting a new crew for the final leg to Jersey. Conrail will not let the D&H/NYSW stacks change crews on their main, so they have to pull into either the D&H yard at East Binghamton, or onto the Buffalo Runner and the Utica Branch. When the new crew is on, they will back the train out onto CR at QD, then head east. |

Ayres Rd |
Description: |
The other end, not the one youre familiar with. The Tioga Center semaphores were at the east end of Ayres Rd. The west end once crossed the tracks on the bridge seen here, but the bridge was closed in the late 80s when it needed significant repair. The Erie had build a number of these bridges over local roads, but never really did much to maintain them. Once they became deficient, there was a lot of finger pointing with the county or town over whose responsibility it was to fix it. Since no one wanted to spend the money-and Conrail surely wasnt-most of them were closed. It would have made a good place to shoot pictures from had the deck not been removed. |

Gaining momentum |
Description: |
SLN 5 behind a quartet of NYSW units, but with a CP crew, rolls 120 platforms and 3 freight west at Endwell, along the George F Highway. Hell ease up here for the 45 MPH curve under Hooper Rd, then open it up for the trip to Elmira and Buffalo. |

Passing by |
Description: |
OIBU rolls past SLN 5 on track 2 as it comes in to do its work at Binghamton. The NYSW crew can see their office from here, but it will be a while before they get there. |

Man bites dog |
Description: |
NYSW crews were no stranger to guys taking photos and video, but it was unusual to see a crew taking video of a couple of fans, as this crew is doing as SLN 5 waits for OIBU to pass it at BD. |
