This short train was at Brooks Av in Rochester over New Years weekend. We have a leased B&O GP 9 in Chessie paint leading, something old. Trailing is a GP 40 in the new R&S paint scheme, based on parent Genesee & Wyomings colors. It is a scheme that will become familiar nationwide as G&W builds its short line empire. |

New paint |
Description: |
The Rochester & Southern was still a new operation in 1987, having taken over the B&Os former Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh lines from CSX. The power was painted in a scheme that was modified from parent Genesee & Wyomings original paint diagram, and would become well known in the short line world as G&W acquired more lines. Here we see R&S 105 in its new dress at Brooks Av yard in Rochester. |

OJT, the Tropicana orange juice train, rolls north at AF. Typically, even numbered units faced north; somehow 138 got turned and is running backward. The train will terminate at Tropicana's Kearny NJ distribution center, where trucks will take the juice throughout the northeast. The cars will return south as they are unloaded, and are not returned as a unit train. |

Seaboard, RF&P and Chessie revived an old passenger train name to boost a pair of intermodal trains between Jersey and Florida. It was easy to spot, as it had RF&P power leading north of Richmond, due to the cab signalling unique to them. The power often ran through to Jersey, as on this days edition, seen at Anacostia in DC. Check out the Conrail IH maintenance truck at left. |

Add on |
Description: |
RF&P had a cab signalling system that was not compatible with anything else, and off line power was not equipped with it, even major connection SCL. This is why you never see foreign power leading there. Train 171 is south at AF with an RF&P leader, added at Potomac Yard just to the north. Looks like the railroad was anticipating a quick turn on the power-RF&P got pretty good utilization, and it was not unusual to see the same power twice in a day-since they added a unit on the rear of the consist as well. The extra power will surely not be needed to roll the train's 96 cars over the RF&P's profile. Of note, three years from the CSX merger, the renumbering has taken hold in earnest. All three CSX units have been renumbered into the 6000's, with the 6531 already repainted. |

North to the woods |
Description: |
This northbound has just worked Danville Jct, trading cars with the St Lawrence & Atlantic, and is now headed north with 85 cars. I didnt chase, as I was not familiar with the roads, and was just able to get this grab shot. |

GP 40s north |
Description: |
The last new power B&M got was a group of GP40-2s in 1978. They're still pretty new in this photo; some are still in service. Here are a pair, along with an ex Conrail unit headed north at Bainbridge in last light |

I went out to Owego to sit and wait for whatever came along. This was one of my rewards, an eastbound with an Alco leading. Some days you win. |

Odd power |
Description: |
Guilford in its early years would buy anything that ran and was cheap. GE U boats didnt command a high resale value, and they picked up some from Conrail, such as this U33B. |
