Eastbound past the park |
Description: |
An eastbound drifts downhill toward Altoona past the park at the curve. Conrail often mixed in 4 axle power on many trains, even on heavy grades. Odd as it sounds, seeing a GP 38 in the Alleghenies was not that uncommon. Check out the Reading hoppers, many of which lasted well into the 90's in coal service. |

Down the Lehigh |
Description: |
This going away shot of CGAL shows it on the connection from the ex EL Southern Tier Line(in the foreground) to the Lehigh Line. The steel bridge it is about to cross is NY 17. The train will be in Sayre PA on the ex LV in a few minutes. It will work the yard there, picking up and setting out for RELCO, a contract freight car rebuilder working out of the ex LV shop, and for local WAIT 2, which works the Ithaca Branch, the remaining portion of the LV Main and Passenger Main to Ithaca via Van Etten Jct. Despite an easy connection here, the EL and LV did not interchange at this location as a rule, and this was used mostly for detour moves prior to Conrail. Also note: see the comment below regarding the Elmira, Cortland & Northern, an LV component whose isolated track in Elmira was reached via trackage rights over the Erie/EL via this connection. |

Even with all the odd and obscure power coming through Binghamton, this was a surprise. Phosphates north |
Description: |
CSX originated a lot of phosphates in the Bone Valley area near Tampa Fla, occasionally sending a train to Montreal via the D&H. The power usually ran through, giving us a chance to see CSX units going north. The northbound trains ran as a unit train, symbolled 751. There was no southbound counterpart, as the cars came back in regular trains as they were emptied. The power ran back on the next availabe train once it reached Canada. This train is heading through Bevier St toward the tunnel now that it has met the SLN 4 at BD. |

Ex CR power on Q 157 |
Description: |
Ex Conrail units were getting to be unusual by this time, so it was nice to get one in the lead, and a rare one at that: this is one of only 10 C30-7's on the CR roster. All their other C30's were C30-7A, a 12 cylinder version that put out the same horsepower. The trailing unit here is also ex CR, now repainted for CSX. |

Penn Division |
Description: |
In an ironic twist of fate, PYRP, once the WR 7, seen at the top of the photo, would have crossed this plate girder bridge over NY 7 on its way north. The D&H last used this bridge several years prior during the detours while Belden Tunnel was rebuilt, and it has sat unused since then. It would not be removed for another couple of years, when NY State rebuilt the NY 7 bridge over Wylie Creek, which PYRP is crossing on the well known Harpursville Bridge. |

Rolling past the signals |

MEBU rolls past the unusual(for the EL) signal mast at Horseheads. There are a set of crossovers here, and the junction with the ex PRR Elmira Branch, which once went north from here after running on the EL from Southport, south of town. |

Description: |
The brightness of the yellow on NYSW 3636 will help its visibility on this (typical)gloomy day as it rolls BUME east at Waverly. Note the dropping semaphore at left above the boxcar in the siding. When was the last time you saw a freight with not one, but two, F 45's in regular service?? |
