Description:  I was on my way to a doctors appointment this morning, when I saw this train hit the crossing at Lincoln Av as I was turning onto the access to US 412. I pulled up on the bridge, and 15 seconds later, was rewarded with this scene, a southbound grain train behind a Belle and a UP unit. Some days, youre just in the right place.

Title:  12T with a mix
Description:  Of the NS trains that run the Tier, 12T seems to have the greatest power variety. I have seen BNSF, UP Wisconsin Central, MRL, IC , SOO and various lease units on the train. Today ranks right up there, with a UP unit leading, and a FURX ex BNSF unit trailing. We see the train at Chemung, where it is interesting to note how the foliage has grown over the years. Look at some of the shots in my albums taken in the early 90s, when there was hardly a tree here. Now you cant see around the curve to the old Erie station.

Description:  The empty oil train takes the siding to pass a southbound AEPX train that is holding the main. Not sure why they do this. It has to be more efficient for the first train to take the siding, rather than the second train, which is moving, to roll through the siding at restricted speed. Theres probably a rule for that, and I am aware of the priority of trains by timetable, but even then, northbound trains have right over southbounds.

Description:  A northbound UP train on the ex MKT approaches the diamond for the one time Rock Island Choctaw Route, now the Arkansas & Oklahoma, seen in the foreground. AOK runs the line from here to a connection with the KCS at Howe. They subsequently acquired most of the right of way from here to Seminole and OKC. I'd love to see an MKT switcher squealing around that connecting track with a cut for the Rock, or a Rock GP 7 doing the same for the Katy.

Description:  The A&M did not usually have off line power, though occasionally UP or BNSF power would go to Springdale to a feed mill on grain trains. Here we see a set of power that had come up from Van Buren on a through move from UP sitting at the engine facility in Springdale. I also once caught a pair of BNSF units rolling an empty grain train north at Rogers, unfortunately, long after dark.

Description:  Sometimes KCS will run extra units on an empty train to balance the power used as DPUs, since they tend to accumulate in Heavener after a run down from Pittsburg, as theyre not really needed for northbounds. Description:  I gave chase of the AEPX train, thinking Id beat him to Davidson Rd, near MP 227, since I was making 65 or so on the road, and hed have a good pull coming up into Siloam, as most of the unit trains do. He made better time than I expected, and I reached the crossing just as the gates went down. Only one thing to do: open the passenger side window, zoom in. Thus we have the bright yellow of the UP leader in low late day sun, accentuated by the dark side of the 125 car train.

Hes waiting there for a southbound to give him the trailing UP unit, as that train is having issues with his power.
