Chessie power |

It was still early enough in the CSX reign that much of the power had not really mixed up. As a result, it was fairly common to see solid sets of Chessie power on the Sea Land trains. We have such a set here on SLN 3, waiting to get onto the Tier next to the old D&H station. |

Add on |
Description: |
RF&P had a cab signalling system that was not compatible with anything else, and off line power was not equipped with it, even major connection SCL. This is why you never see foreign power leading there. Train 171 is south at AF with an RF&P leader, added at Potomac Yard just to the north. Looks like the railroad was anticipating a quick turn on the power-RF&P got pretty good utilization, and it was not unusual to see the same power twice in a day-since they added a unit on the rear of the consist as well. The extra power will surely not be needed to roll the train's 96 cars over the RF&P's profile. Of note, three years from the CSX merger, the renumbering has taken hold in earnest. All three CSX units have been renumbered into the 6000's, with the 6531 already repainted. |

New order |
Description: |
In June of 1988, Guilford cast the D&H off into bankruptcy. The NYSW was named designated operator, and immediately took over running the railroad. They received help from CSX and NS, with CSX financing a total of 20 new B40-8s, as well as letting power run through to Jersey on stack trains. Heres SLN 4 rolling east at BD behind a pair of CSX units and an NYSW SD 45 as the late day sun reflects off the long line of containers. |

Different |
Description: |
The D&H, as a condition of the Conrail merger, got access to a number of points in the northeasu to foster some level of competition. One of them was Potomac Yard in Alexandria VA, which served to make connections with Southern, now NS, and Chessie, as well as the RF&P. All those would eventually go into CSX. Power from the connections ran through, so it was not unusual to see CSX and NS component diesels on RPPY and PYRP. We see RPPY heading for Virginia on the ex Reading, with the usual CSX and NS power, among them an ex SCL GP 40. It was a daily event, but decidedly different from the steady diet of blue provided by Conrail. |

PLMT |
Description: |
Among the as needed moves were coal trains to a power plant in Mt Tom, Mass. These originated on the P&LE, and sometimes the power ran through. A lot of times, it came in with a variety of D&H or NYSW power, along with whatever CSX had to assist. One such train arrives at BD with an NYSW B 40 leading a pair of CSX units and a leaser. |

Unusual find |
Description: |
CSX power was common on PYRP coming up from Potomac Yard, though most often it was various Chessie and ex SCL power. So it was a pleasant surprise to catch this ex L&N unit at East Binghamton. |

RF&P leader |
Description: |
RF&P had a cab signalling system that was not compatible with anything else, so its units had to lead between Alexandria and Richmond until CSX equipped enough of its own units to lead on this segment after it acquired the RF&P. Here a former RF&P unit leads 85 cars northbound rast the Alexandria station. |
