Other trains
Title:  Other trains
Description:  The day the Holiday Train ran, there was also other traffic on the line. In the Siloam Springs album, I mentioned a northbound empty train. Hed get canned at Gentry for hours, and heres why. This southbound was working at Georges in Decatur for several hours, tying up the main. Now hes moving, late in the day. I caught him at Floyd Moore Rd north of Gentry

First catch
Title:  First catch
Description:  The snow event of mid January was not to be the last for the season. Another storm dropped about 6" on northwest Arkansas in mid February. Then it got cold; the next couple days the high didnt get out of the teens. I moved here to get away from this!! Northbound empty grain rolls into Gravette in stinging cold. The weather would get the best of the train a few miles north in Goodman Mo, and kill what would have been an epic day with a southbound.

Butlers Bluff
Title:  Butlers Bluff
Description:  The snow highlights the rocks above the tracks, making them more prominent than they appear without the white blanket, as the train rolls along Butler Creek. This will be the last shot. Ill catch up to him again near Goodman MO, where brake issues will strand him on the single track. Theres a southbound at McElhany that now cant proceed, which would have been a fabulous chase in the snow and bright sun. Sadly, not to be. Some days, the railfan gods frown upon you.

Title:  On our way
Description:  CPs trains used NS symbols west of Binghamton after they gave up the trackage rights inherited from the D&H following Conrail startup. This is 39T, which ran as a haulage train from Binghamton to Buffalo, approaching the curve at MP 220 along the rocks. Its an easy spot to get in and out of. The chase is on!!

In the corn
Title:  In the corn
Description:  I skipped my usual shots in the Owego area, opting for a shot I liked and saw many times, but didnt always have a train to shoot in that scene. Today, the light was going to be right, so I jumped on toward Tioga Center to get this shot of 39T rolling past a field of standing corn, seen from NY 17C. Its a great afternoon shot after the corn goes brown, and I made the most of it.

Back side of town
Title:  Back side of town
Description:  Waverly was one of my favorite spots. You had to hustle to get here from Smithboro or Barton, since you had only two lane NY 17C to work with. From Tioga Center, it was a little easier, as you could use NY 17/I 86 for a fast run to Waverly. The shot here has this magnificent backdrop of old buildings, and would make a great model railroad project. 39T passes the model set as it moves onto single track.

Great curve
Title:  Great curve
Description:  Five miles west of Waverly is this shot at Chemung. It is also an easy catch, since it is on the NY 427 overpass immediately off the NY 17 off ramp. The bonus here is that you have the option of getting back on the highway and bolting for Elmira, or you can flip around and take NY 427 west for a couple of possible shots en route to Wellsburg, though youll miss any shot at Elmira by doing so.

Wide open
Title:  Wide open
Description:  The are here is called Big Flats, which, while its not the wide open spaces of Kansas, is a good sized open space for the region, a place not known for level ground. At one time, there were two double track lines here, the Erie, on which we see 39T, and the Lackawanna, beyond the train, and now completely obliterated. Since 1992, there has been but a single track here. View is from the NY 352 overpass.

Sometimes the chase comes to you
Title:  Sometimes the chase comes to you
Description:  We were down in Westville, just out for a ride in the nice weather-low 60s and sun-when we crossed the tracks to see this empty oil train coming north. Unfortunately, I was crossing from west to east, and had to wait for the train to pass before I could go after it. Thus, this is the first shot, taken near the intersection of US 59 and Chewie Rd, crossing an old stone culvert. This is the DPU-actually, the leading power on the way south-trailing 105 cars.

Taking the siding
Title:  Taking the siding
Description:  The empty oil train takes the siding to pass a southbound AEPX train that is holding the main. Not sure why they do this. It has to be more efficient for the first train to take the siding, rather than the second train, which is moving, to roll through the siding at restricted speed. Theres probably a rule for that, and I am aware of the priority of trains by timetable, but even then, northbound trains have right over southbounds.

Two shots of a grain train
Title:  Two shots of a grain train
Description:  A more comprehensive look at the situation is in the Siloam Springs album. Here are two shots of a southbound grain move, this one as it approaches Lincoln St in a longer view, accentuating the train coming through the sag north of town.

The southbound
Title:  The southbound
Description:  I moved up to the Lincoln St crossing to get the southbound grain train behind a pair of GEs coming through the sag north of town.

Gated
Title:  Gated
Description:  The wide view of the grain train gives away my position at the Lincoln St crossing, the gate in full view. The train stretches back through the dip. The Cobb feed mill we see so often in photos from Country Club Rd is in the distance.

Next days 181
Title:  Next days 181
Description:  Saturday was much brighter, though the trains were still hiding on us. We caught the 181 on the Illinois River as it made its way north. Despite the cold, the snow is gradually disappearing.

Davidson Rd
Title:  Davidson Rd
Description:  The 181 has made it up the hill from Watts with a sizeable train of 65 stack platforms and 22 auto racks, probably the only reason I beat him through Siloam Springs-that and I made most of the lights. The snow is making its last stand. Tomorrow will get into the 50s, and there wont much left

On the crossing
Title:  On the crossing
Description:  The 181s power crosses Davidson Rd, still some snow in evidence across the tracks in the field.
