Other trains |
Description: |
The day the Holiday Train ran, there was also other traffic on the line. In the Siloam Springs album, I mentioned a northbound empty train. Hed get canned at Gentry for hours, and heres why. This southbound was working at Georges in Decatur for several hours, tying up the main. Now hes moving, late in the day. I caught him at Floyd Moore Rd north of Gentry |

In the corn |
Description: |
I skipped my usual shots in the Owego area, opting for a shot I liked and saw many times, but didnt always have a train to shoot in that scene. Today, the light was going to be right, so I jumped on toward Tioga Center to get this shot of 39T rolling past a field of standing corn, seen from NY 17C. Its a great afternoon shot after the corn goes brown, and I made the most of it. |

Back side of town |
Description: |
Waverly was one of my favorite spots. You had to hustle to get here from Smithboro or Barton, since you had only two lane NY 17C to work with. From Tioga Center, it was a little easier, as you could use NY 17/I 86 for a fast run to Waverly. The shot here has this magnificent backdrop of old buildings, and would make a great model railroad project. 39T passes the model set as it moves onto single track. |

Five miles west of Waverly is this shot at Chemung. It is also an easy catch, since it is on the NY 427 overpass immediately off the NY 17 off ramp. The bonus here is that you have the option of getting back on the highway and bolting for Elmira, or you can flip around and take NY 427 west for a couple of possible shots en route to Wellsburg, though youll miss any shot at Elmira by doing so. |

Sometimes the chase comes to you |
Description: |
We were down in Westville, just out for a ride in the nice weather-low 60s and sun-when we crossed the tracks to see this empty oil train coming north. Unfortunately, I was crossing from west to east, and had to wait for the train to pass before I could go after it. Thus, this is the first shot, taken near the intersection of US 59 and Chewie Rd, crossing an old stone culvert. This is the DPU-actually, the leading power on the way south-trailing 105 cars. |

Taking the siding |
Description: |
The empty oil train takes the siding to pass a southbound AEPX train that is holding the main. Not sure why they do this. It has to be more efficient for the first train to take the siding, rather than the second train, which is moving, to roll through the siding at restricted speed. Theres probably a rule for that, and I am aware of the priority of trains by timetable, but even then, northbound trains have right over southbounds. |

Another meet |
Description: |
After shooting the train at Watts, we got the shot of the coal train leaving town, then ran up to Siloam to hopefully catch the head end, which we had missed so far in the chase. He was rolling under US 412 when we passed Mt Olive St, so I made a quick turn on Washington, hoping to beat him to the Jefferson St crossing. He was taking the siding for yet another meet, so easy picking. After all that, a single unit leads. Hell sit here for 20 minutes or so. |

Lucky catch |

We were on our way up to Gentry for breakfast, and saw this 262 heading for us as we crossed the KCS at Lincoln St with a clean Belle leading a pair of CP units. |

262 redux |
Description: |
The 262 I saw on the way to breakfast got to Watts and then canned. It later got a recrew, and rolled on south, ahead of a coal train. Here it is seen from the US 59 shoulder as it approaches Westville. Interestingly, the DPU on this train was consecutive to the trailing unit, CP 8612. Go figure. |

Got him!! |
Description: |
After grabbing the 262 off the US 412 overpass, I shot uptown hoping to catch the head end of the northbound, knowing hed be restricted to 15 MPH coming off the siding. I was able to catch him at Country Club Rd, getting this shot at the crossing, with the Cheri Whitlock overpass in the distance. Of note, the US Army train is led by truly foreign power, a Canadian unit leading a Mexican unit. Go figure!! Not my preferred angle, but it was what I could get, and besides, my bagels were waiting. |

Lite power mix |
Description: |
A light power move rolls north just south of Watts, with a good mix of power, including an international visitor. Also notable is the third unit, KCS 3997, one of the EMDX SD70ACe demonstrators; and KCS 4618, one of the few, but slowly growing number of AC44CW's that are being repainted into the Belle scheme. |

Lite power going away |
Description: |
Because the heavy trains tend to run south, more power winds up in Heavener than is needed for northbound trains. Thus, sometimes a lite power move is done to get all those DPUs back to Pittsburg for another push over the grades on the subdivision. This is one such move, seen going away as it approaches Watts. |

The northbound |
Description: |
The dispatcher said the grain train was to meet a northbound at Stilwell. I was hoping for an actual train, so was sorta disappointed when it turned out to be just four lite engines, now in the siding as they are about to meet the southbound. Oh well....though one of them did turn out to be notable. |

Lite power by the station |
Description: |
The lite power move rolls up the siding as the grain train approaches on the main, holding back so he wont have to come to a complete stop at the home signal. |
