Rolling in the sun
Title:  Rolling in the sun
Description:  For a late afternoon northbound, there were not too many decently lit shots going north. One that worked was this view at Afton, where there was enough angle to shoot from the shoulder of NY 7. We see a PLMT rolling toward the signal at GR behind a mix of power.

Good looking power
Title:  Good looking power
Description:  Once the NYSW decided to paint their power, they put together some good looking consists. This SLN 5 has just pulled up to QD, and now that the rear of the train has cleared BD, it will back its 50 platforms and 4 freight into the D&H yard to change power and crews and roll for Buffalo. The power, an SD 45/F 45/SD 45 set, looks good in yellowjacket paint.

Description:  East Binghamton under NYSW was largely an open house. As long as you didnt do anything stupid, and stayed out of the way, you were unofficially welcome to come down and shoot all the photos you wanted. I made the most of this sunny day in December 1988, getting this roster shot of a set of 45s, led by one of the Fs.

Title:  Busy place
Description:  Despite not being nearly the busy place it was during EL years, there were times in the late 80s and early 90s when there could be quite a bit of action. Today we have some of it as a BUAB with NYSW and D&H power holds track 2, waiting to crossover and take the Buffalo Runner at QD, while a ballast train heads for tie up on the DLW main.

Ayres Rd
Title:  Ayres Rd
Description:  The other end, not the one youre familiar with. The Tioga Center semaphores were at the east end of Ayres Rd. The west end once crossed the tracks on the bridge seen here, but the bridge was closed in the late 80s when it needed significant repair. The Erie had build a number of these bridges over local roads, but never really did much to maintain them. Once they became deficient, there was a lot of finger pointing with the county or town over whose responsibility it was to fix it. Since no one wanted to spend the money-and Conrail surely wasnt-most of them were closed. It would have made a good place to shoot pictures from had the deck not been removed.

SU 100
Title:  SU 100
Description:  SU 100 was the trackage rights train that started it all. When NYSW got the ex DLW Syracuse and Utica lines in 1982, they negotiated trackage rights from Passaic Jct to Binghamton over Conrail to move cars from one part of the operation to the other. Those trains were symbolled SU 99 west and SU 100 east. This SU 100 is getting ready to roll to Jersey with the usual non stack traffic. There must not have been an eastbound stack that day; NYSW usually added cars at Binghamton to any stacks going to Jersey.

NY 10 Panorama
Title:  NY 10 Panorama
Description:  I must have climbed up on one of the yard buildings or something to get this-try doing that nowadays!! This overhead view shows the NY 10 that had been waiting at QD behind a pair of ST units, now with the NYSW power on and ready to back out onto the Tier at QD for the trip east. It also shows the scenic beauty of the Southern Tier, which on a nice day can be really appealing. Its a truly beautiful place when its not raining. We're looking south from Bevier St(the actual street, not just the yard). The overpass is I 81/NY 17; the hills beyond are south of the Susquehanna River. In the right place, they afford a stunning view of downtown, or Vestal, depending on where you are.

Waiting for the new crew
Title:  Waiting for the new crew
Description:  NY 10 is pulled up into Bevier St yard awaiting a new crew for the final leg to Jersey. Conrail will not let the D&H/NYSW stacks change crews on their main, so they have to pull into either the D&H yard at East Binghamton, or onto the Buffalo Runner and the Utica Branch. When the new crew is on, they will back the train out onto CR at QD, then head east.

Odd move
Title:  Odd move
Description:  This NY 10 arrived at Little Ferry behind NYSW 3620/3630/3614. The lead two units were cut off and went across the Overpeck Creek bridge, leaving 3614 to bring the train in by itself. The only thing I can think of that would require this is a weight restriction on the bridge. The 3614 starts its train into the yard now that the two leaders are in.

Rolling east at Roods Creek
Title:  Rolling east at Roods Creek
Description:  SLN 4 rolls around the big curve at Roods Creek-between Deposit and Hancock-though you cant see much of it for the foliage. This is a great spot in winter, but the NYSW SDs look good here in new paint.
