Easing down |
Description: |
KL 1 eases its 15 K Line platforms down the Buffalo Runner to QD. It will open up there to get on the Southern Tier for a run to Buffalo. We also see here the caboose on Conrail local WABH 11, and the nose of a dead NYSW C 430 just to its left. At far left is the D&H station. The Chenango St overpass crosses the whole show. |

Snowy coal |
Description: |
A shot I wanted to do, but never seemed to be in the right place for, was this shot from NY 17C in Campville. It didnt turn out as well as I had hoped, as the lighting was a problem most of the day, and there was more clutter than at first glance. Either way, heres a 98 car UB series coal train behind the usual set of SD40 types. |

Seldom seen signal |
Description: |
Actually, I used to see it all the time. Signal 216-2, the distant signal for CP Johnson, was easy to see, just hard to photograph. You could see it from the NY 201 overpass to the west, but stopping there to take a picture was out of the question due to traffic. This was a walk in from the old Broad St crossing. I wish I had done it a little more often. The offset lights were a peculiarity of northeastern railroading not seen much in other parts of the country. HAN 1X passes on its way to Buffalo. |

Scenic 309 and a surprise |
Description: |
Train 309 rolls west along the Susquehanna behind two units that would later get the "golden rodent" and become fixtures on the short lived 416 and 417 trains from Saratoga to the Bronx. Today they are headed to Buffalo with none other but an ex PC E 8 tucked in behind. |

Deep in the gorge |
Description: |
In some places, the valley is 1000 feet from the river to ridge top. This is one such place, just west of West Cameron, where there is not room for tracks and road on the river bank. The road was built on the other side of the river at this point. From that location we see 270 roll east beyond a field of hay bales. |

On the fast track |
Description: |
The Southern Tier Line west of Hornell was double track to CP River, roughly where the old NT tower was on EL, where the River Line to Olean split from the Buffalo Sub. Under Conrail, it had a dual personality. Track 1 was fairly well maintained, and good for track speed of 40 MPH. Track 2, on the other hand, was not. It had about 10 miles of 25 MPH running, the rest 10 MPH. It was jokingly referred to as the "D&H Main," since dispatchers faced with a choice of running a D&H train on track 1, or a Conrail train, would send the D&H train down track 2, making for a long trip to Hornell. Train 270 had good luck this day, and got the fast track. Seen here passing the semaphore pole-about 7 cars from the head end, on the left-at Hunt with 11 intermodal and 36 freight. |

Plenty of power |
Description: |
Train 557 gets underway from East Binghamton with more than enough power to get its 27 COFC and 6 freight to Buffalo. Note the bridge pier being poured at the far right. The new Conklin Av overpass is being built to replace the ancient steel bridge the train is passing under. The new overpass will have a much more gentle S curve, to the relief of many motorists. This location is known locally as Holmes Crossing. |

Parking lot shot |

Getting a shot of a northbound in the early morning could be problematic due to not having good side angle. The light was good as a rule, just nothing much open. There was a restaurant in town that had a fairly wide open shot in the parking lot, which is where we see 413 headed north |
