First encounter |
Description: |
Wed just come back from Wal Mart, and in the process of unloading the weeks goodies, I heard a horn. I quickly got the stuff in the house and took off. Turned out what I thought was a northbound wasnt, but I sometimes dont catch up to them right away, since the northbounds are usually lighter trains, and can get a good roll on. So, I went to Decatur, hoping that was the case, and Id catch it. When I got to Decatur, the signal was lit green for a southbound. Ill take it. At least I didnt waste the trip. A KCS Belle leads 125 cars of grain south. |

Sometimes its a short chase |
Description: |
I went on to Gravette, hoping there would be enough light to get him at Dallas St, but that was already getting into shadow, so I was able to get him a little closer to downtown, just barely. Time to head home. Id see the 261 near Decatur, but the light was far enough gone by then that there wasnt s good shot. |

DPU |
Description: |
In the CPKC regime, the operating plan has moved to mid train DPUs, and its become common to see them on grain and mineral trains. The 4111 was 61 cars deep in the 125 car train. We saw it as a DPU on a coal train back in January-see the Snow Days album-and it was dirty then. Doesnt look like its had a bath since that day. |

Making the grade |
Description: |
Theres another steep climb coming up out of Sleepy Hollow, which taxes the southbound loaded trains. After getting the shot at Gentry, I was able to get ahead far enough to see the signal was at approach, and the train had not yet come around the curve at the base of the hill. The next jump would be a lot less frantic. |

It's a short chase, but, oh, goody!! |
Description: |
We had gone out to Wal Mart late on Saturday afternoon. When we got up to Lake Frances Rd, I looked over to see a northbound coal train on the crossing, just cresting the hill from Watts. I could not see the power, but when we got up on the US 412 overpass, I could see it had not reached the crossing farther down on Lincoln. Maybe I can beat him. In a marvel of good timing, as we crossed the tracks, to the north was this soutbbound approaching. Oh, goody, I thought-a meet. This is the 262 approaching Lincoln Av crossing. The northbound was still sneaking up on us. That would be the real surprise. |

Northbound start |
Description: |
Sometimes what I expect will be a chase in one direction, turns out to be the opposite. I was coming back from picking up pool chemicals, and heard a horn. I gave chase, beating this empty crude oil train to Gentry. When I got there, I noticed the switch lined for the siding. Looks like a meet is imminent. The oil train, five units up front, has pulled partly into the siding as it waits for what will be a southbound oil train. |

Caught him |
Description: |
I had started out with a southbound that met an empty grain train at Siloam; now there was another meet in the mix, the same southbound meeting this empty grain train. I had heard them talking about the meet on the radio, and went south to see if I could intercept the northbound. I was able to get him just as he reached the crossing north of Westville, |

Approaching approach |
Description: |
The northbound grain move approaches signal 238-0, showing approach, as it will take the siding there, to meet the southbound holding the main. Interestingly, the defect detector here an MP 238 still announces "KCS detector." The detector at Davidson Road, north of Siloam, MP 226.7, has announced CPKC for a couple of months. |
