Delayed chase
Title:  Delayed chase
Description:  I was dropping my recycling when a northbound empty coal train went past the dump. I was elbows deep in a bin of plastic and glass, and it was already 1515-they close at 1530-so I needed to get the task done. The coal train-led by a KCS unit and a BNSF Grinstein-was moving too fast for me to catch up, and I had things to do at home. After he went by, a track car got track and time to go to Gentry, then clear up by 1600, there was a southbound at Noel. I went to Gentry at 1600, no train, so worked north, finally catching him coming across Roller Av as I got into town.

Lucky catch
Title:  Lucky catch
Description:  Some days you live right...wed gone to the local rock and gem show at the Siloam Springs armory. As we came out, I could hear a northbound takikng the siding for a meet. We went up to Tahlequah St to get the southbound, and hopefully the meet. As we crossed the tracks at Lincoln St, there was another fan. This is unusual. I can count on my fingers the fans I see chasing this line, so something was up. What was up was this southbound oil train, led by the Support the Troops unit.

Straight for us
Title:  Straight for us
Description:  I beat feet down to Cave Springs, beating the train there handily. Its 15 or so road miles from Stilwell via SR 100 and a county road to the tracks, but only about 10 for the tracks. The railroad does some winding around in the hills and dales, so if you dont waste any time, you can get this shot of the southbound stretched out on the main, about to pass the southbound home signals.

Just barely
Title:  Just barely
Description:  As I was about to take off, I was again waylaid by another slowpoke. It was like the Truman Show, when he decides he wants to leave town, all the traffic comes out. This day, the obstructors were all in league against me. This guy was going about 45-the road is 55 MPH-and I passed him as soon as I had a clear shot. Now ahead of the train, I got him rolling around the big curve approaching Bunch.

Barely beat him
Title:  Barely beat him
Description:  After shooting the train at Siloam, we stopped by the house to grab drinks and a pit stop, and off we went. For some reason, a lot of people think running 10 MPH under the speed limit on a dry day with little traffic is just fine. I found one of them on the way to Summers on Ark 59. Usually I can beat a train to Westbville, but not when some bonehead is going 45 MPH on a road that has a lot of curves and few passing zones. The train was on the crossing when we got there, and I beat it to Baron, getting this somewhat shady photo on the Barren Fork Creek bridge.

Anticipation
Title:  Anticipation
Description:  The automatic at 219-2 is red, the southbound having turned it as it approaches. The signal is at the crest of a short but steep grade, and even moderate sized trains drag here. The M trains 68 freight, 20 stack platforms and 15 autoracks are proving a challenge.

Closer view
Title:  Closer view
Description:  One of the things I like to do is get some of the environment in a photo-lineside hardware, which is harder and harder to find, now that pole lines are largely a memory-buildings, and such. This old building is adjacent to the tracks just north of the overpass, and makes a nice prop. The M train rolls past, about to pass under Ark 12.

Feed mill
Title:  Feed mill
Description:  I dont usually get a shot of a train "downtown" as it were in Siloam; Im usually up at Davidson Rd, or at Tahlequah St, at the north end of the siding. Southbounds havea a good climb out of the Flint Creek valley, and I knew if I hustled, I could beat him to town for this shot of him rolling past the old feed mill adjacent to the tracks.

By the office
Title:  By the office
Description:  I dont usually do chases that go through Siloam Springs-I live there, most of my excursions begin and end there, and its a challenge to drive through(lots of lights and traffic), where the trains roll on. It was early enough in the day to stay the course on this M train, so I went with it. I didnt get down to Watts fast enough to get him coming off the Illinois River, but was able to beat him to the yard. The M train passes the yard office and customer Bakery Feeds non stop. The chase is once again on.

It's a short chase, but, oh, goody!!
Title:  It's a short chase, but, oh, goody!!
Description:  We had gone out to Wal Mart late on Saturday afternoon. When we got up to Lake Frances Rd, I looked over to see a northbound coal train on the crossing, just cresting the hill from Watts. I could not see the power, but when we got up on the US 412 overpass, I could see it had not reached the crossing farther down on Lincoln. Maybe I can beat him. In a marvel of good timing, as we crossed the tracks, to the north was this soutbbound approaching. Oh, goody, I thought-a meet. This is the 262 approaching Lincoln Av crossing. The northbound was still sneaking up on us. That would be the real surprise.

Northbound start
Title:  Northbound start
Description:  Sometimes what I expect will be a chase in one direction, turns out to be the opposite. I was coming back from picking up pool chemicals, and heard a horn. I gave chase, beating this empty crude oil train to Gentry. When I got there, I noticed the switch lined for the siding. Looks like a meet is imminent. The oil train, five units up front, has pulled partly into the siding as it waits for what will be a southbound oil train.

Across the creek
Title:  Across the creek
Description:  The DPU on the southbound oil train rolls across Baron Creek as it makes its way south. Theres just enough sun angle to get it well lit. Another couple weeks, the bridge will be in enough shadow to put this shot in shadow.
