Chase over
Title:  Chase over
Description:  My joy at finally getting a train led by an ET44AH was short lived. I ran into Baron, thinking Id get this across the field shot, which I had done last week with the DPU on a northbound coal train. I pulled onto the shoulder to get out of the way, then realized I wanted to move back about 20 feet to frame the shot better. What I didnt see was the stub post from a road sign-ironically, probably a grade crossing sign that was moved-that was sticking about six inches up from the ground, and not visible from the car. I backed over it, blowing out my right rear tire. This was the only shot I had, and the last one Id get. Someday.....

Anticipation
Title:  Anticipation
Description:  I heard a northbound working up the hill from Watts, but had to finish a chore. When I got done, I took off, thinking Id have a little time, since the grade usually slows the trains down. The complication is, theyre working on the Ark 264/Lincoln Av overpass at US 412. Its down to one lane, with a traffic light to alternate the traffic. While Im waiting for the light, the train shows. Now Im playing catch up. I went to Decatur, since Gentry has a sketchy sun angle for northbounds, and set up. The southbound automatic is red, indicating a northbound in the picture. Hell be here shortly. The two head signal northbound is the distant signal for CP South Dorsey. The station, now a museum, is at left. On the south end of the museum is caboose 385 and F 7 73D

Title:  Flooded
Description:  I knew I would not beat the head end here, but the going away shot of the DPU passing the low water crossing south of Noel promised to be a good shot. We had several inches of rain earlier in the week, and all the creeks were flooded. Lucky I could even get here.

And were on
Title:  And were on
Description:  Wed had 8 plus inches of snow earlier in the week, and I wanted to go out and get some photos of trains in the snow while it was still here-snow is s religious event here; God sends it, God takes it away-since the cold usually doesnt last long. God was working overtime, as the forecast was for the high 30s, but temps were high 40s when I got out. So, not soi much snow. My first look at the railroad was to go up to Davidson Rd north of town. The signal there was green, so I went back down to set up for a shot. This is a southbound M train splitting the signals at North Siloam.

About time
Title:  About time
Description:  When I was following the northbound empty grain train, he called to a train at Dorsey, between Decatur and Gravette. He had an apporach signal at 219, so would likely get an approach medium at 216 in Decatur, indicating he would be getting a signal at South Dorsey to take the siding there for a meet. I went to Mt Olive Rd to set up for the southbound, hopefully getting there before he did, and shooting both trains, then chasing the southbound back home. I need not have feared. The southbound, this TXUX coal train headed for Texas, showed up 45 minutes later. The best laid plans.....

Coal DPU
Title:  Coal DPU
Description:  I heard a southbound coming into town and beat it for Westville, since thats usually where I can catch up to the train. When I got there, no train, so I started working back north. It turned out to be a southbound TXUX coal train that had stopped at Watts to look for a hot box that had a hit on the detector, and the crew was walking the train. I got the DPU, a mix of KCS, KCSM and BNSF power at the north end of town. It would be a fruitful, but short, chase today, finally in some sun after two weeks of gloom.

Rolling at you
Title:  Rolling at you
Description:  I had heard a horn from the house about a half hour earlier and took off, driving from my house down to Westville, then backtracking up to Watts. As I crossed the Illinois River bridge, this southbound grain train was just reaching it. I turned at the next intersection and gave chase, catching him here at MP 238, getting this telephoto view as he rolled toward me. Today's chase would expand my horizons a little, as I took it past my usual stopping point of Stilwell, and on 13 more miles to Bunch OK.

Home signal
Title:  Home signal
Description:  The southbound train rolls past the northhbound home signal at CP South Cave Springs. I didn't dawdle getting here from Stilwell, getting out of town on OK 100, five miles, then left on Bunch Road-there's a sign, which is really helpful, given that road signs in rural Oklahoma, as in many places, are often lacking-then six miles to get here. I beat the train by about five minutes, so hustle pays. There's a nice morning shot about four miles south of here, from up on a hillside I want to try when the timing and time of day work out.

Back onto the main
Title:  Back onto the main
Description:  I caught up to the train again at Bloom, Kan, where he was clearing the west end of the siding there. I keep trying to picture this with a set of battered Rock GEs, or GP 35s.

Theyre everywhere
Title:  Theyre everywhere
Description:  Many towns have grain elevators out here, not surprising given that this is wheat country. Quite a few of the smaller town elevators are no longer rail served, due to the economics of unit trains. This one still had a siding, so perhaps its still an active rail customer.

Into the sunset
Title:  Into the sunset
Description:  The westbound rolls away from me into a Kansas evening. Theres still a siding switch here for the elevator. MP 363 is from Kansas City. I had to give up on the chase here, as there was a detour on US 54 that took me away from the tracks, from Minneola to Meade via US 283 and 160. Oh well.
