Open for a northbound
Title:  Open for a northbound
Description:  Shooting a northbound is always tricky on a north-south oriented line, as this shot in the late afternoon at Gravette shows. Since then-now ten years, has it really been that long since I left the frozen wasteland of NY state??-some of the foliage has grown up here, making this shot problematic. The power is still with us though.

Ran him down
Title:  Ran him down
Description:  The down side of chasing northbounds is that most of them are empty trains, grain or coal, mostly. As a result, they move right along. While 40 MPH may not exactly be land speed record stuff, when you have to deal with towns, slowpokes on the road, school buses, etc, keeping up can be hard. This guy was already on the Lincoln Av crossing when I got to it. He beat me to Gentry, and the possibilities at Decatur are slim at this time of day. So I went for almost 20 miles to get him in the hollow between the north end of Dorsey siding and Gravette. Worth the effort!! Note the second unit, one of the gray GE's that has been repainted. There are a growing number of these, but it seems more effort has been put into the EMD's. Most of the SD 70MAC's are painted.

Against the sky
Title:  Against the sky
Description:  After getting the shot in the hollow, he beat me through Sulphur Springs, and I was even with him through Noel. I was looking for a meet there, but nothing coming south. I was able to get ahead for this shot at Ginger Blue, a sun lit shot in the summer, but dark side in November. Still, the trees cooperated for what turned out to be an OK shot.

Good light
Title:  Good light
Description:  As the days grow shorter, getting an afternoon train in good light becomes a race. The northbound I was following was already encountering a lot of shadow at 4 PM, but this spot along MO 59 south of Goodman is good this time of day, and the angle works nicely.

Title:  Taking the meet
Description:  The grain train meets the southbound H train, rolling up the siding at Mc Elhany as the southbound pulls down. I dont know it yet, but the H train will meet the northbound H train here too.

Meet the DPU
Title:  Meet the DPU
Description:  Southbound merchandise train will usually get a single unit DPU, on the rear if no intermodal or autos, and ahead of those cars-generally-if there are some. The H trains DPU passes the head end of the grain train, stopped here to wait for the signal.

Fly in the ointment
Title:  Fly in the ointment
Description:  This train was on the siding at Watts waiting for a new crew. While he was there, the dodger would come down, run the main to the south end of the yard, then do his work. While that was going on, the H train arrived, and had to sit on the main waiting his turn. Normally the dodger would take the siding, and work from there, though the locals ofter need the main for headroom anyway. It would get busy there in about 90 minutes.

Earlier look
Title:  Earlier look
Description:  When I got to Watts, the sun was on the east side of the train, so we have a look at it from an angle I dont usually get. The power is notable in that it is a pair of AC44CW's repainted in the Belle scheme. There are more now, but not nearly as many as the SD 70M's.

Got beat again
Title:  Got beat again
Description:  I was heading home after chasing the southbound H train earlier-that effort is in "The Chase Is On"-when I saw this southbound on the Illinois River bridge. There was road work in progress between there and Watts, so chasing for the head end was out of the question. I was able to get the DPUs as the train passed the crossing leading to the bridge and Lake Frances.
