Caught him
Title:  Caught him
Description:  We again divert from our usual haunts to chase the Union Pacific, this time on their Kansas Pacific route, from Denver to KC. It was in recent years and coal funnel, with much of the coal comng out of Wyoming headed for Kansas City routed here to take it off the Overland Route in Nebraska. Thats now down significantly, and seeing trains here is a some time thing. During a stay at the KOA in Strasburg, we found the tracks were literally over the fence from the campground. So on Saturday of Labor Day weekend, when a train passed at 1000, I was off. I caught up just outside Byers, starting a run at this eastbound oil train.

Elevator
Title:  Elevator
Description:  The one ubiquitous feature of almost all of these high plains towns is the grain elevator, though many of the smaller ones have gone to trucks as the railroads priced them out for lack of volume, or theyve closed entirely. This one here at Deer Trail is still viable, but no longer rail served. The oil train passes on a Saturday morning.

Title:  Over the top
Description:  Despite what many think, the terrain here is not pool table flat, and there is some roll to it-and there is a gentle drop in elevation as the line moves east.. The oil train comes over a rise, and is now headed downhill into Agate.

Cottonwood
Title:  Cottonwood
Description:  The high plains are generally bereft of trees-the Denver area gets only about 14" of rain annually, most places west of the 100th meridian(the OK-TX panhandle border) get less than 20"-so the trees tend to grow where there is underground water, which is more prevalent than youd think. The giveaway to the presence of this water is cottonwood trees, whose roots grow down to access it. They also make for a good photo prop, as we see with the eastbound oil train near Agate

Big tree
Title:  Big tree
Description:  I had started out from home when I heard a northbound going into town. I was far enough behind the empty grain train that I did not catch it until Gentry, and I was still halfway back in the train. Holding there was a southbound Q train, which I decided to follow. I caught him at Davidson Rd, passing one of my favorite photo props with 85 freight, 13 articulated auto racks, and 8 stack platforms.

Title:  Hay!!
Description:  The southbound Q train rolls out from behind a barn and lined up hay bales. This was not the shot I wanted here, though its a good one. I wanted to get both units and some of the train, but the camera decided to not trip the shutter for the second shot. I was not happy, and my commentary scorched a few cows.

Out of the shadows
Title:  Out of the shadows
Description:  The great thing about the short days of fall and winter is the low light, which saturates the colors. The down side is, a lot of shadows you dont get the rest of the year. Southbound Q KCNL rolls out of the trees at a county road crossing that would be fully lit in the summer

Taking the siding
Title:  Taking the siding
Description:  We were leaving an appointment in Siloam when we heard a horn in the distance. It turned out to be a northbound empty grain train, which we took off after. We got to Gentry just as he reached the south siding switch. Here is taking the siding while the southbound dodger, returning to Watts, waits on the main.

Second southbound
Title:  Second southbound
Description:  The northbound grain train that had taken the siding was still waiting after the dodgetr went south, so I went up to North Gentry to check the signal. No sooner than I got across the tracks, this southbound TXUX train popped out of the trees, in what passes for fall color around here.

Two views of the northbound
Title:  Two views of the northbound
Description:  After shooting the coal train, I decided the dodger was going to be long gone, and only going as far as Watts. The coal train had BNSF power, which by itself is fine, but in the face of the CP merger, Im trying to get as much KCS action as I can, so it was off to get the northbound, which I had not yet shot anyway. Here he is crossing Y City Road south of Decatur, splitting the crossbucks.

Finally the southbound
Title:  Finally the southbound
Description:  I started out chasing an empty American Electric Power train from Siloam. He was held at Dorsey, just to the south, for this southbound, which didnt show for about 45 minutes. Its the Q KCNL, which will blow right through on the main with 84 freight, 1 auto rack, 13 articulated auto racks, and three stack platforms. This would have been in the Out and Back album, but traffic and slow pokes kept me from getting ahead of it going back to Siloam. Cant win em all.

Empty coal
Title:  Empty coal
Description:  Sometimes I can hear trains all the way from Watts, though usually not til they get closer to me in Siloam Springs. I heard what sounded like a northbound climbing the hill, but a quick ride around town yielded no train. I headed up to Davidson Rd to see what was going on, and found a southbound oil train on the crossing. I made a quick turn, and beat it for Watts. The oil train had gone through, no surprise there, but had met this coal train there. I caught it on the Illinois River bridge in cruddy light. Still a pretty shot, though.

Caught up
Title:  Caught up
Description:  I ran to catch the coal train one more time, mostly to get the engine numbers, since there were a lot of them, a total of six heading north. KCS must have been using this train to balance power. Typically, there are not nearly this many units on one train.

Description:  The oil train has pulled up by the Adair County barn, holding out of the siding at Stilwell, waiting on a meet with a northbould. Sneaking up
Title:  Sneaking up
Description:  As the dodger puts his train into the yard, the southbound Q train rolls down the main behind him. The Q train will have a surprise, which well see once the dodger clears, and the Q train fixes a software problem on the lead unit. Remember when fixing a diesel issue was just resetting a relay??

Description:  The dodger got his train put in the yard, and the Q train was having an issue with his lead unit. I went south a half mile or so to get him on the big curve near MP 237. As he came around, the second unit caught my eye: KCS 4006, the Support the Troops engine.
