Over-under
Title:  Over-under
Description:  The station at Woodside was a great place if you liked main line railroading and transit. Dad is on the LIRR platform as a No 7 Flushing train makes its stop overhead. The IRT platform was a great place to see LIRR action from, which in those days meant C 420s and ping pongs, as well as hand me down long distance cars on the east end trains.

Deepest station
Title:  Deepest station
Description:  This is the IRT 191 St station on the No 1 line. It is the deepest station on the system, at 180 feet below the street. It was a long ride on the elevator, at least it was in the 70s when we rode. Theyve probably improved them by now. Date is approximate. There was no date on the negative sleeve or the contact sheet.

Orange
Title:  Orange
Description:  No, not Syracuse, though dad was a 1954 grad. The MBTA Orange Line, which, in 1975, had seen a major upgrade, coming off the elevated line it had run since the turn of the century for a new right of way. We see some new cars as we head out of the city.

New train, new station
Title:  New train, new station
Description:  The Orange Line had just had a major rebuild, the elevated portion of the line being taken off the old steel structure, and put on a new concrete viaduct, though some parts were in or under a highway. This is a set of new cars at the new Sullivan Square station. Boston color coded the equipment to match the line it was on, so here, it was orange trains.

Kenmore
Title:  Kenmore
Description:  We went to Boston in 1975, a trip in which we used the T extensively. Dad took some photos in the system there, this one on the Green Line at Kenmore. For us New Yorkers, used to heavy rail and high level platforms, the low platform to accomodate PCC cars in the tunnels was a novelty.

LIRR from the subway
Title:  LIRR from the subway
Description:  This is the view of the LIRR Main Line from the 61 St station of the Flushing Line. I rode this to school every day in the mid 70s, and saw a lot of action down below on the LIRR. Then it was mostly C 420s on the Hunterspoint Av trains, and a wild variety of passenger equipment. Wish now Id had a camera.

Watching and waiting
Title:  Watching and waiting
Description:  The view from the 61 St-Woodside platform looking toward 52 St. There was a short hill between the two stations, as well as some curves. You had to keep an eye out for your train as it approached. The sun glints off the rails on a late summer afternoon.

Lots of walkways
Title:  Lots of walkways
Description:  The Metro Center station was a transfer point, and had a lot of walkways to speed pedestrian traffic. The lower level was not yet complete at this date, but would come on line the next year. I was back here ten years later. It was quite busy, and the foresight that went into this station was evident.

Platform vie
Title:  Platform vie
Description:  A look at the Metro Center station from the Red Line platform. The low angle only reinforces the cavernous effect of the arched station roof. The indirect lighting makes the station look dark, even more so than some of the IND stations I was familiar with in New York, some of which still had at that time, the original incandescent bulbs from the 1930s.

The way it was
Title:  The way it was
Description:  Washington had a rail transit system prior to WMATA. It was, like most, a group of streetcar lines. DCs was notable in that it had the wires underground, accessed by a unique "hook" that reached down into the slot in the middle rail to contact for power. An example of this is seen here in the Georgetown section of the city.

Car map
Title:  Car map
Description:  Like most systems, WMATA had maps in their cars. I was used to New York, so this system was a snap to learn. They did build out all the lines on it, too. At the time, there were only a couple open, but the advantage of the trains for getting around DC-a city that is a real pain in the butt to drive, and park, in, was obvious.

Title:  Train to Farragut

Railfan window
Title:  Railfan window
Description:  One of the good things about the cars that equipped the Metro was that they had good windows in the front, full width of the car. This allowed someone in the front of the car the ability to see everything the motorman saw, as well as watch him run the train, though with automatic train operation, mostly what they did was watch. It was interesting, compared to what I was used to on the NYCTA.

Rhode Island Av
Title:  Rhode Island Av
Description:  The last open stop at this time on the Red Line was Rhode Island Av. Dad got a shot of the station. A plus was the B&O yard down below, which had a B&O geep working farther down. We were staying in a motel in Alexandria, which was a lot cheaper than in DC. We'd drive into the city, passing Potomac Yard going and coming. I saw a lot of Chessie, RF&P, and CR power, but was not able to get photos. The real treat was the night we went past the yard and there was a Chessie train about to roll out on the ex C&O. In consist was WM 7151, one of the red, white and black F 7's. It was after dark, so no photo, but 40 years later, the memory is still vivid.

Wasington Metro
Title:  Wasington Metro
Description:  In 1976, we went to DC for a week, mostly doing the typical tourists stuff. Rather than drive around, however, we decided it would be easier to park somewhere and take the subway around the city, which was(and is) a good idea. The system at the time was basic, as it had opened only several months earlier, only a start on the great transit system it has turned into. Dad got this shot of a train at one of the cavernous stations that were typical of the line.

Cavernous and dark
Title:  Cavernous and dark
Description:  The Washington Metro used indirect lighing in its stations, which I always thought were dark compared to other cities, especially New York, where I rode most of the time. Seen from the pedestrian overpass, a look at one of the stations, which looks quite dim from this angle, though the light was better at platform level.

Neither rain nor snow
Title:  Neither rain nor snow
Description:  The New York subways have a lot of underground routes, but in the outer boroughs, there is a fair amount of above ground trackage, such as the Flushing Line. Dad is at 74th St/Broadway, having just come upstairs from the IND Queens Line down below. A train of R 36s enters the station.

Snowy station
Title:  Snowy station
Description:  Like every other outside station this winter, the snow will become a problem. In another week, it will be pushed up to the railings to make room on the platforms. The last of it will not melt til Easter. The 74th St station gets a coating of the white stuff as riders hunker down.

New station
Title:  New station
Description:  Actually it was new in 1970 or so, but while the design was classic IND, the materials-mostly terrazo-were quite a departure from the concrete and tile that had been standard for many years. Dad shot the mezzanine of the 6 Av/57 St IND station, served by the B train at all times except rush hours, when the newly established K train, that went to the Broadway Brooklyn elevated via the new Grand St connection, was in service.

Platform level
Title:  Platform level
Description:  The new station was quite bright, much more so than the older ones, since it had fluorescent lights, rather than the bulbs in the older stations. This made the stations much more appealing, and probably safer. At the time, 57th St was the terminal for the B train, two of which are seen here. The train on the left has just arrived; the train on the right will be departing shortly for Coney Island via the Grand St connection, Manhattan Bridge, and the West End line. The cars are R 32s, the typical equipment on this line. When the K ran during rush hour, it almost always got R 9s. If anyone remembers the opening to Welcome Back Kotter, it was the West End line that you saw the high school from, as it is elevated south of 39th St/9 Av in Brooklyn.

R 32s
Title:  R 32s
Description:  By the time this photo was taken, in 1992, the R 32 cars had already been in service for over 25 years, and would see yet another rebuilding that would carry them into their fifth decade of service. Now having been demoted to secondary lines, they carried on, taking over trains that had once been the stomping grounds of "old" cars-R 10s, for example. As one who recalls these cars in their prime, its hard to see them as the old guard. Were at Chambers St in this photo.
