Daylight
Title:  Daylight
Description:  This shot of the IRT Broadway and 72nd St station shows how close to the surface the original line was, the sun streaming through the ventilation grates to the street at the end of the platform. This was part of the original 1904 IRT line, which just marked its 111th year in service as I post the photo.

Inside the monorail
Title:  Inside the monorail
Description:  Dad did a west coast trip in 1997, where he visited, among other places, Seattle. A trip there would not be complete without a visit to the Space Needle, and a ride on the monorail built for the 1962 Worlds Fair. This is the interior of one of the cars.

63rd St Tunnel
Title:  63rd St Tunnel
Description:  One place that never had a station til the 63rd St tunnel was opened in the 90s was Roosevelt Island, which by then had become somewhat gentrified. In previous generations it was home to a number of state hospitals, primarily mental institutions, and never had subway service.

Remember these??
Title:  Remember these??
Description:  At one time, kiosks such as this one at Braodway and 72nd St were common in Manhattan, but by the late 60s, almost all of them had been removed in favor of the stairs you most commonly see today. The MTA has restored some at various stations, making for a much more elegant entrance to the system.

New line
Title:  New line
