The new station was quite bright, much more so than the older ones, since it had fluorescent lights, rather than the bulbs in the older stations. This made the stations much more appealing, and probably safer. At the time, 57th St was the terminal for the B train, two of which are seen here. The train on the left has just arrived; the train on the right will be departing shortly for Coney Island via the Grand St connection, Manhattan Bridge, and the West End line. The cars are R 32s, the typical equipment on this line. When the K ran during rush hour, it almost always got R 9s. If anyone remembers the opening to Welcome Back Kotter, it was the West End line that you saw the high school from, as it is elevated south of 39th St/9 Av in Brooklyn.
