On the Lackawanna
Title:  On the Lackawanna
Description:  KL 1 rolls out track 3 past the old DLW station, avoiding Conrails WABH 11, which was working its train on the Erie side. Three CP units have todays K Line stacks well in hand for the trip to Buffalo. The train will get onto the Tier a mile to the west, at CP Johnson. We get a good look at remaining DLW facilities in this photo. The station is at right, behind the power. The cars behind the train are in the set off tracks, where sleepers were spotted in and out of through trains. The cars there now belong to the Susquehanna Valley NRHS. The small building with the stack is the station powerhouse, which provided power to the station complex, and steam for the set out cars. The steel tower is one of the earliest radio installations in the country, done by Marconi himself when DLW was testing the viability of radio communications in the early 20th century. It is now an engineering landmark.

Hustling home
Title:  Hustling home
Description:  WABH 11 rolls through BD on its way back to the yard after switching in Kirkwood. In the background, CP power on MEBU is hiding in the shrubbery. It will go west on track 3, avoiding WABH 11 working at QD. It will join the Tier at Johnson, out on the west side.

Into the shadows
Title:  Into the shadows
Description:  The shorter days are making it harder to get the late afternoon shots, especially where there are buildings to block the sun. A just a little too late KL 1 comes into Binghamton behind a yellowjacket and a pair of CP units. It will wait here at the south end of Bevier St for BUAB to pass. Once it clears the Buffalo Runner, KL 1 will proceed to QD and the Tier.

Heavy power for KL 1
Title:  Heavy power for KL 1
Description:  KL 1 was usually a short train-rarely more than 50 platforms-and typically got a single unit, one of a very few trains to be so lightly powered. So this KL 1 with four units for 13,000 HP for its 25 platforms was a surprise.

New symbol
Title:  New symbol
Description:  Same train. RPPY became train 556 under CPs regime, as nearly all trains had numbers, as opposed to the former Conrail style alpha codes instituted by Guilford. We see 556 rolling across the Southern Tier at BD, 25 cars in tow behind its two units.

Rare leaser
Title:  Rare leaser
Description:  Train 554 arrives at Binghamton with a CP unit and a PLM lease unit. This was unusual, as this train almost always got solid CP power, and frequently, Alcos.

A bird in the bush
Title:  A bird in the bush
Description:  I tripped the shutter just as this 310 passed a trackside shrub, one of those close but no cigar shots. Still, its a good scene.

No more siding
Title:  No more siding
Description:  Northbound 270 rolls past the remains of the siding at East Worcester, part of CPs plan to slim down the physical plant. When they were done, the only sidings between Binghamton and Schenectady would be at Afton, Oneonta, Richmondville, Cobleskill and Delanson.

D 22 with big power
Title:  D 22 with big power
Description:  D 22 typically got a pair of 4 axle units, GP 38s or GP9s, but once in a while, an SD would pinch hit. Todays train has 5684 leading, replacing what was most likely an ailing GP9u.
