This was taken from up above Corning on the NY 414 overpass. It gives a good look at the layout in Corning-see the photo of BUME from 1987 in the D&H album for a deeper explanation. The train, TV 300, is on the ex Erie post 1951 alignment, which took the railroad out of the street in downtown Corning, and made a connection with the NYC here. The east leg of that connection is in the foreground. The red lights at CP West Glass, visible to the right of the train in the distance, mark where the west leg of the NYC connection joins the Southern Tier Line. The empty bridge abutments are the abandoned DLW, which passed here before it diverged shortly to the west to head for Bath, Groveland, and Buffalo. |

BUOI rolls into Hornell past Cass St tower, now a relay case for CP Cass, as it enters Hornell. The tower is partly seen at far right. To the far left, coming out from under the first car, the track leading to the left is the Erie main to Jamestown and Youngstown OH. It was cut the year before, when Conrail essentially abandoned it as a through route, with what little traffic remained served by Olean based locals, with cars forwarded over the ex PRR Buffalo Line. It would be another ten years til WNY&P resored the connectino after NS took over the line. For now, we have only the ghosts of ELOI and 2NY 100 to take the switch and climb toward Tip Top. |

The CSX former ACL line through Rocky Mount NC runs right down the main drag in Rocky Mount NC on a dedicated right of way. While keeping vehicles and pedestrians off the tracks, it does tie up the town, especially for a southbound entering the yard. Here a four unit set of B36-7s leads a pig train north. It did not block traffic for long!! |
